Brand New Malfunctioning Cowon J3: Please Help!

Head-Fi!

Please offer any advice you have--I'm flippin' out. I just received my new Cowon J3 player that I purchased through the JetAudio store along with a Cowon brand screen protector and clear case. After carefully removing all of the items from their packaging, reading the Quick Guide and manual available online, and armoring my player with said protection, I plugged the beautiful 32GB J3 in to my computer (Sony VPCEB17FX) running up to date Windows 7 Home Premium to receive... a USB device malfunction notice! F%*#! I've tried every trouble shooting trick in my arsenal, which, I'm rather certain are all that're in the book. I reset the player, my computer, then both, plugged it in while turned off and while turned on, reset the player while plugged in... nothing. Now neither the player nor the computer respond to being connected. I am using a USB outlet on my motherboard (as supposed to an outlet on a external hub). The player itself seems to function fine: touch screen works, starts up, recognizes microSD card, shuts down, etc. It's running software version 2.23. I'm so frustrated! I'd been waiting all week for this new player and so carefully prepared it for use. Cuss! Thanks for reading and for any help you can give.

I'd contact jetaudio or check out iaudiophiles.net - it's a cowon fan site, and they may have some useful advice for you. Best of luck - I'm hoping to get a J3 in the near future as well.

That's iaudiophile.net, no S, but yeah, it's a helpful community over there.

Since you're able to turn on and use the player, you can try changing USB mode (Settings -> System)

Thanks, guys. After the disappointment I decided to return it and order a new one. Let's see if the next one performs! Also, I went ahead and ordered the HM-101, Fiio E3, and Yuin PK3s! Had to make up for my loss.

WAT. I just received a second J3 from JetAudio, Inc. and AGAIN it will not communicate with my computer. While the J3 was off I plugged it in and it powered up, but there was no register on my PC. I've visited iaudiophile (thank you for that reference, guys) but found no relevant help. Is this typical with J3s? I have another Cowon player, the D2, and have had no problems with it whatsoever. Again, I tried every troubleshooting technique I know to no avail, including switching USB mode from MSC to MTP and back again. Dare I return yet another and order a new one? Any other comparable player out there that won't yank my chain? Thanks for reading.

Did you try different usb ports ?

Did you try to connect another usb device to the same port (memory stick, external drive) ?

I had weird results with different DAPs depending on the port I use...

I guess it has something to do with the power delivered by the usb port being sufficient or not to properly connect the usb device.

I'm really not sure that all motherboards are up to usb standards to be honest, same for usb devices.

I also had more trouble with long usb cables than with short ones.

Too bad Cowon has switch from mini-usb port to proprietary connectors. They should definitely go back to mini or micro-usb port, so you're not stuck with the provided cable.

Is it showing up in the Device Manager?

I'm going to go ahead and suggest a silly possibility.

Is the cable plugged into the J3 properly?

The first couple times you plug it in, you really have to jam it in there, and it fits tight.

Have you tried to connect it to another PC?

Guys--I figured it out. Go****mit. The first player was for sure a dud. The second one, is not. You're right, andrewberge. I'm usually so careful with all of my gadgets and one really does have to jam the plug into the player. Seems aggressive and yet it's what needs to be done. I did this with the first one I received out of frustration to no avail and hadn't tried it on the second as I was more patient and didn't want to damage it... it sounds so good! FLAC on Cowon J3 + Fiio E3 + Future Sonics Atrio M5s = boss. Also, I received the HiFiMan HM-101 and it's surprisingly wonderful! I've been using Headphone's Bithead for a long time now and I may like the HM-101 equally if not more--it's a fraction of the price! Kind of disappointed with the PK3s, though. They can't handle lows unless I have the wrong amp. Thanks for all of your input! I f'n love music.
