DT880/600 amp for excellent timing and low volume performance?

Thread Starter

Looking for an fast and organic sounding amp with great pace (imo a function of very stable timing) and excellent transient response, esp. at low to moderate levels.

Budget up to 700 new or used. i am open to dac/amp suggestions up to 3k aswell (over 1k with preamp function to use with my speaker setup, even a dac/pre direct via balanced outputs?). I might have a chance to try the eximus-dp1 in two months - i will report. amp should have reasonable value. dont wanna spend 3x for maybe 5%. tube or SS.

At the moment i use M50 and HD600 with gilmore lite + standard PS. Really like the DT880 and will buy it standard or balanced - depending on your suggestions. Didnt like higher end stuff like hd800, t1, he6, lcd2 - super speed but odd and thin sounding to me.

I think you'd really like the Woo WA6-SE with the 880's.  It took me a while but I finally found a set of tubes that make mine sound better than they ever have on any other amp (6FD7's from Jack and a NOS 5931 rectifier).  In terms of speed, I think the SE has few equals.  It's not overtly organic but it does have a very smooth sound.

Also, I haven't heard it with the 880's but I REALLY liked what I heard from my LCD-2's out of the Woo WA2.  Because it's OTL, I bet the WA2 sounds very nice with the 600 ohm beyers.

Good luck in your search!
