Beyer amps with 100 ohm output impedance. Lolwhut? - Page 4

I "built" my answers into your question:

Are there any differences between an amp with 100 ohm output impedance, the same amp with 0 ohm output impedance with a 100 ohm imp adapter?

No sir!

An example would be:

- If beyer decides to build another version of their A1, but with 0 ohm output impedance; would that amp + the 100 ohm adapter be the same as the current A1 with 100 ohm output impedance? (provided that all circuits are the same, the only difference is the output impedance)

Yes sir!

Is that an A1 MK II or is that the A2?   LOL!

I don't understand your second question - please clarify.

You'll have to ask beyer about your third question. As mentioned previously in this thread, there is an international standard IEC 61938 which specifies 120 ohm amplifier output impedance for driving headphones.

I don't see the point of the IEC standard.

Just turn the volume up and down as needed. That's what it's for. LOL!

Maybe Beyer has a better answer than me.

'Cos I certainly don't want a 120 ohm impedance driving my AKG Q701s or my future Grados!

Thanks biggrin.gif.

Hopefully I will like Beyer's "intended" sound signature; cuz currently I'm seriously in love with my dt990 driven out of 0 ohm output impedance lol.

Also why 100 ohm adapter and not 120 ohm adapter?

Does the 20 ohm difference lies in the cable or something? Or is there no 120 ohm resistor?

First impressions (like literally 30 minutes in):

It's good... but in all honesty, it's too much like the Mixamp, so.... I don't see much of a benefit other than adjusting room size and ambience. In terms of sheer surround positioning (with BLOPS and Mass Effect 2), it feels relatively the same. More testing to be done, but other than the benefit of having virtual surround for movies (DTS works, meaning all Blu-Rays will work with this), can't justify the $1100 tag. I was expecting something much closer to the binaural demo (though it says Dolby Headphone, it is NOT Dolby Headphone, it is BINAURAL):

The rear positioning on that demo is INCREDIBLE. Both DH and the Headzone's DSP don't do it as well.

My impressions may change, but I honestly don't see it happening.

One thing to note: The D7000 doesn't sound like it's messed up or anything, which was a fear due to the high 100ohm output impedance.

Why 100 ohms?

Not 120?  I guess that question is aimed at the the adaptor manufacturers.

Relative to 600 ohms, 100 or 120 ohms makes very little difference.

They do make 120 ohm resistors.

The cable has virtually zero resistance.

I have an old power amp with a 150 ohm headphone jack, I've tried plugging in my AKG Q701s, let's just say I wasn't too impressed with the bloomy bass.

I also tried some 2,000 ohm Sennheisers, they sounded really punchy and dynamic (compared to other amps). They aren't the world's greatest 'phones!

hhm.... Headzone not justifying the cost? It's your job to find a Realizer now :p

There is an article on Stereophile which completely discredits the IEC 120 ohm headphone amp output impedance standard as a ridiculous sham.

Bottom of page three, for those wondering.

Not entirely sure what my opinion is worth since most of this thread is beyond my knowledge and experience but, I skimmed through it since I was interested in what the outcome was.

I started looking for a headphone amp a while ago and perhaps I got a little carried away but I ended up with a Beyer A1. At the time it was probably more subconscious but now I fully intend to get a set of T1s to go with it.

I wont go into why I got the amp because that's a whole other story I got the amp to go with my MMX 300 headset. Initially the MMX 300 was only plugged into my Titanium HD soundcard but since I got the amp I've been using only that. Recently I've had a pair of the original Beyer DT990s donated to me and after a little reading I found these only come in 600ohm flavours so I was interested to see what they would sound like.

Overall they don't sound that dissimilar aside from the obvious differences between open and closed cans. I'm not sure how it does it but it manages to sound pretty awesome to my ears with either headphones. At some point in the future I'll get the T1s and I'll have those to compare with but I'm still pretty content at the moment :)
