A Solution to ATH-M50 Tightness Comes By Way Of FA

My M50's second set of earpads started gaining noticeable cracks in the past few weeks, but being broke I continued not to order new ones. Today, it finally struck me that I had some leather pads from my FA-003 lying around somewhere, never used. I dug them out and hastily put them on the M50, and what a difference it made! Not only were my pads new, but they made the M50 so much more comfortable. Whereas my ear would previously touch the cloth over the driver and become painful after only a bit of time, now it sits just in front of the cloth. There's finally space, and the pure softness of the leather solves the M50's tightness problems! Its pure depth makes up for the M50 headband.

Who knew?

Before this thread slips into complete obscurity, I must say that the FA-003 pads make the M50 look better in my opinion, too. I'll post photos tomorrow.

How do they sound?

where can i order FA pads?

I think the FA-003 pads and the Shure pads sound terrible on the M50. AT got the sound right with the stock pads, too bad the material isn't as good as the sound. Just my opinion of course...

Finally someone agrees with me tongue.gif.  After I tried the DT250 pads I realized exactly what you just said.  I think the pads are a major factor in tuning the frequency response which I really don't want to mess with.

I found that they do take a bit of life out of guitar and that they make the bass a bit boomy, but switching over the the velour pads from the same headphone cleared it up quite a bit. They're now my permanent M50 pads.

How much more/less do the 003 pads and the SRH 840 pads leak on the ATH M50?

The FA-003 pads have more or less the same level of leak (I think they leak a bit less sound but it may just be me), but I haven't tried the SRH 840 pads so I can't provide a reference towards those. The M50, in my opinion, doesn't have a huge leakage problem to start with.

I personally think the velour pads look neat on the M50, if a bit large. The leather FA-003 pads are the same size and design, but are extremely pillowy brown leather, which looks out of place. As you can see in the second photo, the inside of the velour pads is leather, also.
