Dac and headphone amp

Hey guys,

I'm new to this audio thing. I have a computer and my headphones are plugged in to the soundcard. And it sounds pretty crappy compare to when I plugged it into my iphone.

So I began looking into DAC and headphone amp. since I'm always listening music from my computer through my headphones.

I came accross the pro-ject usb box and head box, which seem reasonably price.

Another one, is the nuforce HD.

the fiio  e10 are really cheap too.

What are you guys thought on those? Maybe another alternative? my budget is around 500$, I don't wanna spend too much cuz I'm not really an audiophile, but I just want to improve the sound quality when listening to music on my computer with my headphones.

Thanks,

I would go with the Total Bithead from Headphone.com first as it is known to be built and tested really well.  I own one and really like it.  It is both an amp and DAC.  The next best option would be the FiiO E10 as it also posts some nice numbers, but I have yet to compare it to my gear.

Heck for under $500 you could buy the Bithead new as well as some awesome headphones like the V-Moda M80 or Beyerdynamic 1350.  The Bithead + Beyerdynamic DT 1350 comes to $450 new through a reputable dealer.  This is my highest recommendation for you.

For $500 you have quite a few choices .

possibly a yulong d100 which is a amp and dac compbo , should see you some change see project86 great reveiw here - http://www.head-fi.org/t/499562/review-yulong-d100-dac-amp-reference-quality-with-a-reasonable-price.

It will also help to mention what phones you are using .

also you could go for seperate dac and headphone amp option which will give you easier upgrade paths.
