New to IEM's

Well, I'm new to the head-fi community in general, but the only IEM's I have are the yuin pk3's.

I love the sound of the subtle bass and excitment of the mids from it.

Although It was only 30-40 bucks, I listen to these the most often I think.

Anyways, I was wondering if higher end IEM's (like $200-400) need proper amping to sound good.

Also, I was wondering if they had good directional sound compared to full headphones?

PS.  My yuin pk3's came with foam tips, but I never understood what they did.  they made the fit feel forced, and the sound a little more full, but muffled at the same time.  I like a articulate sound, so I never used the foam tips.  what are they actually supposed to do?

Thanks!

Nearly all IEM/earbuds do not need an amplifier to perform at least 90% of their possible sound quality. Only things like the Yuin PK1 and HiFiMan RE272 come to mind, and even they are OK out of an iPod. In the $400 range, I can't even think of anything. Customs generally don't need amping. And actually come to think of it, if you like the PK3 and are looking to upgrade, both the PK1 (earbud) and RE272 (IEM) should be on your short list, if you happen to get into amplification or get a fairly powerful player. RE262, Ortofon eQ5, and JVC FXT90 all come to mind too, and are at different price points. Many high-end IEM and earbuds will have great directional sound (soundstage), but it almost never matches what the best full-sized heapdhones can do.

The foam tips are for extra comfort, so that bare hard plastic isn't against your sensitive earbones, but only *if* you have larger ear openings. If you have smaller ear openings, they will press the earbud shell closer against your skin in an uncomfortable and sound-muffling way. It's different for each person and each earbud.

The Sennheiser IE80, JVC FX700 and Sony EX1000 offers wide open soundstage with great mids, highs and tight punchy lowend without AMPing but definitaly improve with AMPs help.
