I mean, it's a pretty badass custom setup, but it'd be a lot more valid if it was a heavily modded M-100 instead.

All righty, it's Wednesday and I met with my friend today.

$50 Sony MDR-V6 vs $310 M-100

He generously lent me his V6 for the day, and he has the predecessor to the V6 (MDR-7506), so he didn't mind if I abused the V6 a bit.

^ folding mechanism, check

^ can "stand" on the hinges when folded, check

^ flexible, durable headband, double check

metal earcup enclosure, check

^ can "stand" on the earcups, check

^ cozy, comfortable earpads, double check

In comparison, the Clip Zip couldn't even fit in the M-100's earcup because of the hexagonal shape

The driver enclosure doesn't press on my ears nearly as hard as the M-100 since there is some cushioning material between the earpad felt and the driver enclosure itself, as opposed to just the earpad felt and earcup enclosure on the M-100

Sound:

• The V6 actually sounds surprisingly good to my ears; for ~$60, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to people if they're looking for a good headphone for home use
• The soundstage of the V6 is MUCH larger than that of the M-100. If you thought the M-100 has a large soundstage, think again. The V6 produced a very 3-dimensional sound experience in my head, similar to the SRH940. L/R imaging was very good, and the sense of depth was good but not overly done like in the M-100. It really puts the M-100's "colossal soundstage" to shame, seriously.
• The upper-treble response is much better with the V6. Details in the cymbals are audible again and it makes the V6 a much better-sounding headphone for rock music in general. That being said, the treble does sound bit tinny and thus has an odd timbre.

• The midrange isn't as recessed as it seems. It is laid-back relative to the bass and treble a bit, but not nearly as much as the M-100. Never mind, the midrange is farther back on the stage than on the M-100, but the overpowering bass effect doesn't happen so the midrange actually stands out more than on the M-100. Volume matching is very hard to do with these two headphones so I cannot say for sure if the midrange is more or less laid-back compared to the M-100; I can say that the midrange of the V6 is so much clearer that it sounds more forward compared to that of the M-100. The midrange is SO much clearer with the V6. Listening to Fila Brazillia's "Heat Death of the Universe" album sounds much more enjoyable with the V6. Try listening to Massive Attack's "House music" Teardrop and you can immediately tell that the singer's voice is more forward/in-your-face/clearer than on the M-100. Lindsey Stirling's violin takes the main focus of her songs again, as it should, instead of the bass on the M-100.
• The bass is loose-sounding to my ears, but the quantity of bass is just right for me for home listening. Bass extension is a bit lacking, but not nearly as much compared to the SRH940. It isn't overly bloated and overpowering like the M-100; very little, if at all, lower-midrange veiling occurs.
• Basically everything in the V6 sounds much cleaner, more airy, and less congested.

^ no lower-midrange recession, "flat" midrange line extends to the upper-midrange (~4 KHz) which might give the impression of more lively upper-mids (in my opinion and experience it does), bass roll-off indicates a lack of bass extension, higher upper-treble response indicates better treble extension (again I'm not an expert at interpreting graphs, so I may be wrong)

Once again, the M-100 is still my number one headphone for mobile listening, but for home listening, I MUCH much much much prefer the sound of the V6 even if it doesn't have the same detail resolution, and the odd-timbre treble. The MUCH more spacious soundstage is more suitable for orchestra music, the much better treble extension is ideal for rock music, the much better-defined midrange is ideal for vocal-based music, and the bass is still adequate for bassy music.

For ~$60, I wouldn't hesitate recommending the V6 to someone, I can't say the same for the M-100 though.

And yes I tried the V6 vs the M-100 on the bus...I can't tell you how awkward it was to have people look at you weird with 2 headphones. The M-100 blocks out much more noise.

The point of it is so that my face doesn't show up in Google Images, or things of the sort.

I'm not the only person to sensor my face on Head-Fi any how, so it's a personal choice.

Still waiting on my lindsey Stirling CD and that shipped over a week ago. Not looking forward to how long the M-100's could take, even with the second fastest shipping method.

Not had confirmation of shipping yet.

I got so exited when I saw my shipped status on the order page I had to tell my friends and I am totally in love with v-moda and the headphones I still don't have... Still, I believe my input will not be worth much in audiophile leagues but to my seinheisser or beats or even iLuvs (WTF) owner friends it's a start to introduce them to awesome headphones with quality and style.

I am thinking of dual cable usage with my phone and iTouch.. it'll be very interesting the first couple of days... but not stopping the music and talking on the phone with one pair is a hidden feature that is very much appreciated by me as a Long-board(Fanny-pack)/Gamer/College guy. It may seem a bit unnecessary or even awkward to use it as such.. But why not? I mean, if it can be done and it's useful for me it makes me happy to go around with two cables going out of my headphones awkwardly.

On the product description "The headphone softies have no adverse effect on the frequency response or audio delivery of the headphones, and offer an additional benefit by extending the life of the original headphone earpads." but I would take that with a grain of salt seeing as the M-100's sound is greatly altered by simple modifications.

Hey Val, I ordered my M-100's on the night of November 29th, when can I expect them to be shipped? Also, how long do you guys think they will take to be delivered from LA to Brooklyn New York using USPS standard shipping?
