hm now that we can buy these things for 109 or so, I wonder why these haven't been killing the M50s for recs. They're at least 10 dollars less than the used M50s for sure. Now I'm wondering how they compare...

I could be wrong but it looks like they are 109 on buydig because they are factory refurbished, not brand new?

The Q40's are great sounding cans. Rumbly bass and smooth mids are heavenly especially when paired with an amp. Just they're built like crap and fit terrible. The M50s and even the Pro700MKII and M80 are built like tanks in comparison.

I like the Pro700MkII depending on source. I like its synergy with Cowon players (which have Bass and BBE features that really clean up the Pro700's sound, particularly its ugly mids). Not so much with Walkman or Ipod. I am intrigued about its pairing with the ZO2. The Fiio E11 pairing was a let down.

As for the M100, I imagine they will punch harder than the Q40 (like the M80 and M50 currently do) with longer extension in the bass region than the M80, though not quite Q40 levels. The mids and highs? That's the million dollar question.

Yes, they are refurbs, but at half the price of new, I think it is worthwhile.

The M50's have greater detail and more extended highs, but not the same bass.  I really like vocals on the M50 much more than the PRO700MK2.

Since im like alot of folks out there, with not too much spare cash.. would this be a good starter setup?

M100 and fiio E17.?

Assuming the m100 gets good reviews, which i think will be a nobrainer.

That's the same set up I'm thinking of. M-100 + FiiO amp

I wasn't suggesting it isn't worthwhile, just pointing it out for those who might not have been aware. Some people were wondering about the price difference between those and the ANV's which are listed as new, and if they were that much better for an extra 90$, probably not realizing one is new and one is refurb.

So Craigster, if sibilance was not there on the Q40s which one would you pick?

I am listening to the PRO700MK2 as we speak and they are growing on me as my ears adjust to the slightly darker signature and I am also starting to pick up more midrange detail.  It really depends on the music you like.  IMHO, if you prefer dance/hip hop/club, go with the PRO700MK2.  If you prefer vocals, classic rock, soft rock, go with the Q40.

With luck, the M-100 will be able to accommodate both worlds.

I agree that your best bet is to wait for the M-100.
