I have been using IEMs for a long time and have decided that I would like to try out some full-sized headphones. I will be coming from a pair of Hifiman RE0s, Fischer Audio DBA-02 and Audeo PFE 122s. For the most part, I would say I preferred the sound of the RE0s, followed closely by the DBA-02s and then the Audeo PFE122s. I am not fond of the Beats Tour. I don't really know how to classify the sound signature I enjoy: I think I prefer a neutral sound with very distinct separation. Bass isn't my biggest concern, but it needs to be there and it can't be underpowered (though I imagine no matter what the bass will be fine, since I'm used to IEMs). I listen to quite a bit of rock (generally with lots of distortion) and folk, some punk and classical, and a tiny bit of metal and electronic. I will be listening to CDs and lossless mp3s through my computer (Creative X-Fi XtremeAudio, willing to upgrade) and a Cowon J3. I'd also like to use them for gaming and movies, but I have another headset which has suited me just fine so far so it isn't a huge concern. I do not have an amp yet, though I'm willing to get one later on down the line (you can recommend some of those as well, hopefully between $100 and $200). The headphones don't need to be portable or particularly durable-- these will be for listening at home. The budget is around $300- give or take. I am not adverse to buying used or new (I will actually probably be buying a used set from one of you on this forum), and I am not in a big rush to buy them. I just want to know of a few headphones that I should look out for that are around that price or can regularly be found around that price.
I was originally looking at D2000s and HD600s. The recessed mids on the D2000s sort of worries me. From what I've read, HD600s are still a go-- it's just a matter of waiting until I find a pair for the right price. Are there any others I should consider?
