Etymotic hf3 and Toshiba Gigabeat problems....

So I picked up some Etymotic hf3s on clearance at Best Buy because I had a gift card there and my in-ears were not very good.  I didn't really need the mic/apple functionality, but for half the price of hf5's how could I say no?

I immediately tried them on my Gigabeat (rockboxed) and couldn't get the volume to come through.  I know fit is essential and trust me, I had them in my ears correctly.  I found that if I pushed the play/pause button (the middle one) then the sound came through loud and clear.  I tried the phones with my laptop and presto! no need to push the button.  But anytime I plug into the Gigabeat the volume is reduced to about 10-15% of normal unless I continually hold down that middle button.

Has anyone else had or heard of this issue?  I searched hf3 and gigabeat but only found two threads that mentioned them.  I may have to take them back for store credit if this keeps up, and I don't want to do that.

My Gigabeat S was is not compatible with 4-pole headset plugs. Yours is probably the same. You need one of these or an HF5.

Thanks! I'll look for a 4-pole to three pole adapter then.  It looks like the one you linked was a 4-pole male end, so that one might not be quite right.  I would have guessed that an adapter was available, but I was worried it was the phones.

You don't need the right number of contacts, you just need the ground to be in the right place (i.e. where it would be on a 3-pole connector).

OH, I read up a little and realized that it was the contact locations on the jack that was the problem, but I didn't realize the one you linked swapped contact locations.  Thanks again for all your help!
