HD580 upgrade to HD650

It is definitely a side step, in fact I personally prefer the HD580/600 for there smooth balanced sound. If you want a similar warmer sound then you will like the HD650s, if you want a brighter, more impactful sound then you might prefer the balanced sound of the DT880.

Technically, the HD650 is probably a small upgrade from the HD580, but the biggest difference is obviously tonal. I would not blindly upgrade to an HD650 from the HD580 because they are just different variations of the same sound. If you love the HD580/600, but are looking for the same tonality with a more fleshed out and bigger sound and impact (and more bass), than you might want to consider "upgrading." I still recommend you listen to the HD650 before purchasing if you can, because you may be disappointed how similar the 650 is to the 580/600.

I have the 650s & I know someone with the 600s. To me the differences are pretty subtle. I find them to sound similar.

I had a similar question on a similar desire for an 'upgrade'. If anyone can give additional input, it would be greatly appreciated!

I had the hd580 and loved it. Once I upgraded to the hd650 there was a moment when in the beginning I was like "where did the treble go?". But now that I've gotten used to them damn! Going back to hd580 really seems like stuff is seriously missing. The hd650 does something that good speakers do. They give weight to the music. It's not as airy as the hd580 but the tonality was actually to my liking eventhough I loved the 580.

I feel that they indeed are an upgrade to the 580/600 but some do hear it differently.

I use my DT880 for every well recorded genre and my Sony XB500s for poorly recorded Dubstep/trance etc.

My most versatile all-rounder I'd say is my D5000, with a nod to my HD-600 and SR-325is. 

I have a friend that has the HD 600 and I cannot for the life of me tell the difference between it and my HD 580's as for the HD 650's that belongs to his boss that were on loan to us well it just had a little more of everything but emphasis on little if it were me and I was going to upgrade then I would go with HD 800's.
