New Phones: Beyerdynamic T70

I ordered a pair of T70's as a closed set of cans to accompany my HD650's.

I read a lot of mixed reviews about them stating they were very good phones but not a lot of people found the value for the price. I hope the mild bass and clarity is what it delivers because that is what I purchased them for.

I will update when they arrive tomorrow and then after that after some listening time.

I will be driving them with  Meier Audio Corda HA-II MkII.

Looking forward to your review, I am kinda interested in it hearing it's theDT770 upgrade- and I really believe the T70 would need quite a long time to open up.

Well the T70's landed today.

My first impressions upon opening them up are as follows.

Good heft, not heavy. They actually were slightly lighter than I expected them once I opened the carrying case.

They are smaller than they look online and are slightly smaller than my HD650's (maybe not THAT small.)

I really don't like Beyers cord management for packaging. The cord has dents in it from the twist wrap and kinks from the spring wrap.

I don't care much for the cord, maybe I was spoiled with the great cords on my HD650's and Westone UM2-RC.

They are comfortable, not as comfortable as the HD650's which caress my head, but they are pleasant and unobtrusive.

The velour is nice and supple, which was a big decider in this pair over Audio Technica or Denon.

Isolation is decent, it's somewhere directly between HD650's and UM2's.

For sound, comparing them to HD650's they are more harsh in the upper treble.

The sound is very crisp, like most reviewers state slightly recessed lows, but you have to give up something with closed cans.

There is a slight case of sibilance which can become annoying with certain singers (the s-sounds really pierce from some performers notable Queen).

Overall I'm finding myself very happy, we'll see if they "burn in" or if my ears get more used to them.

Do you find them to be lacking on bass? lets say when compared to your 650's.

I would find them lacking bass, but it's not to the point of ruining the sound. I going to let my ears warm up to them more before I make too many more statements about the sound.

Sure, just wanted some out-of-the-box impressions.

Are you using the 0-ohm or 120-ohm output with the T70's?

I am driving them of the 0Ω output, the 120Ω output sounded very light and distant, in no way good at all (same case for the HD650's). The only worthwhile use I've had for the 120Ω output is with my UM2's which have terrible hum out of the 0Ω output.

A friend of mine comment that the Tesla driver exalted in high and details, yet the trade off would be the bass. I really wish a closed bass monster would be available form Beyer some day.
