I've been using HFi 780's for a couple years now, and like them a lot. I've got the itch to try something a little pricier. Can anyone tell me if going to the Pro 900's is worth it? How do they compare soundwise?
Thanks in advance.

Improved bass, mids, and better soundstage. They are my basshead cans.

All depends of your music genre, personally i prefer the HFi780 (musically speaking, lol), a much better all rounder headphone imo than the Pro900 (better technically speaking). Mids are effectively more detailled on the Pro900 but they are also more recessed.
Imo if you liked the HFi780, you would love the Pro2900 ( one of the best all rounder for the price), i said pro2900 not pro900,lol.
By the way could you compare 780 with AD900 for pop music ( sound leakage of AD900 is not a big deal)?
Personally I find the Pro 900 an upgrade in most categories. More bass all around, similar brightness, increased resolution and detail, larger soundstage, greater comfort. It's possible that the mids are slightly more recessed due to mid-bass bleed, but the higher resolution at least to me makes the mids sound better than on the 780. The only real downsides are that it's larger, so less portable, leaks a little more sound and doesn't isolate as well, is more in need of amping, though you can get by without it, and of course, pricier.
Thanks for the replies.
I'm just wondering if its a big enough "jump" to even bother with. Or if I should just take the big leap and get something like Edition 8's or even switch brands to something like Beyerdynamic Tesla T1 ?
BTW, I listen through my fully restored Sansui 9090DB, and it seems to make just about any can sound good.
My opinion is that the Pro900s improve with better amping due to the heavier drivers, the HFI-780 are nice in that they don't need a pricey amp. As far as an improvement in the overall sound, I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. They're a little more refined which means you loose just some of the bass bloat and there is more detail in the highs as the expense of some sibilance. While I would consider them an upgrade if you have the right amp for them I would consider other headphones like the T1 as mentioned if you want better SQ with just the right amount of emphatic bass.
Getting a little off topic, but would a headphone amp be a large improvement over using my mid 70's Sansui 9090DB monster receiver? I love the old time, analog sound I get. Especially with vinyl.
I've been really happy with the 780's. Just looking for something new.
It's hard to say how well the receiver powers your phones considering they're all different and I haven't heard the Sansui myself. I don't find the Ultrasones, be it the HFI-780 or PRO900 to be very accurate with real instruments. I would consider them a predominantly electronic genre headphone, I'm now sure how much of that you find on Vinyl. Personally I used the 780s with poorly recorded electronica and dubstep because they didn't show the flaws like my DT880s. I have since sold the 780s and consider the Sony XB500 better for my poorly recorded bass-heavy genres.
I listen to just about all genres except hip hop, and my sources are an iPad, vinyl, and a CD player, all piped through the Sansui. I favor metal, electronica, prog, and late 60's/early 70's rock.
I guess there is no real answer to a lot of "what sounds best" type questions. I'm satisfied with what I hear from my 780's, I just have some money to burn on gear, and would like to spend it wisely, and get the most improvement for the buck that I can.
Of course, the AD900 leaks much more than the HFi780. The AD900 is an excellent all rounder imo. The HFi780 is a much more aggressive headphone, more fun imo, but i prefer the easy listening from the AD900. Bigger soundstage, more balanced and natural, the AD900 is a good choice for most genre, but if you like EDM or very bassy music, its not the best.
