Headphone prices (Denon D2000, Beyer DT990 pro, etc.)

been shopping around for headphones to buy in a few days. i was excited because the denon d2000 is on sale again for $280. i have looked at beyerdynamics before but people usually suggest the 600ohm versions which are usually around $300 and tend to be tricky to power. i was looking recently at the dt990 again because of a review where skylab  liked it in some ways better than d2000, i dont recall which version though. anyway i just noticed that the dt990 pro 250ohm is going for $172 which seems like an amazing deal, any thoughts.

$172 is normal price for a PRO Dt990, a 600ohm can go for $225 on amazon. Also look out for warehouse deals on amazon where they sell used but like new condition items at a substantially lower price.

i had no idea, i usually only looked at the 600ohm premium versions in the past as they got the most attention. at that price i could also grab a fiio amp at the same time. excuse my lack of proper punctuation, im on my phone and it doesnt work well with this forum.

Just cranking the DT990 600ohm out of a WA22 - probably the best amp pairing I've ever heard thus far

for these. Bass is not too overwhelming, mids still present but as expected a tad distant.

If you're after the DT990 Pro - hope you have quite an appetite for bass as even the Premiums are not

 shy in that department!

If you have a really good source, go with the beyers.. they are more power hungry than the D2000's which are more forgiving.

X2 The Pro has noticeably more mid bass than the DT990/600, though the rest sounds similar. I never thought mid bass was a strong point in the 600ohms, as I felt they had more sub bass presence. The Pros switch that around.

I figured all that from looking at the response curves. Im not actually after a huge quantity of bass, just good low end extension and impact when needed. Technically the D2000 is better suited, I was just surprised at the very low price of the dt990 pro. Im also looking at the Kenwood K1000 but it's close to the top of my budget. Any headphone I get I will mod anyway.

if you think 280's a steal.

open box d2000's on amazon for $200.

Hey, another Bloomington resident!

I've not personally heard the DT990s, but the frequency response measurements for them have always looked rather strange. Even at $280, I'd lean towards recommending the D2000s just because of the measurements. The D2000s are awesome and well worth the $280 price tag, though I'm sure you could find them cheaper.

Since you mentioned that you'll be modding whatever you get, the D2000 is a good option for that as well. They have a fairly strong modding community (or, at least, it used to be pretty strong). Personally, if I were to mod the D2000s, I'd replace the cups' stock dampening with Dynamat and a layer of Paxmate or Silverstone acoustic foam on top of that. I would also place Dynamat on the back/sides of the driver/magnet and front side of the driver baffle. The acoustic foam could probably be applied on top of the Dynamat on the driver, but likely not on the Dynamat on the baffle. Lastly, you could then stuff the earpads to your liking or try the J$ pads. A stock D2000 with J$ pads (not sure which revision) has a remarkably flat frequency response according to the measurements on Innerfidelity. The upper mids and treble are a bit "edgy", but the D2000s have characteristically sparkly treble to begin with.

I actually modded my D2000s into open-backed headphones. If you get the D2000s, you can try that out pretty easily in a totally reversible way. The details are in my signature.

You might also want to consider purchasing a pair of Fostex T50RPs. They sound horrible stock, but with $40-50 in modding materials and a few hours of your time, they sound downright sick. So, for a total of $125 (cost of headphone plus mods), you'll get a pair of headphones that, if modded correctly, aren't too far off from something like the LCD2. They do need a nice amp and DAC, though. The D2000s are much more forgiving in this regard and work well from nearly anything.
