unamped fun closed headphones under $100

Dear fellow head-fiers,

I want to get a new set of closed cans for under 100 that I can use with just my ipod. I listen to a wide range of music, so a balanced sound is important, but I don't want them to sound cold or analytical.

Durability is very important, and it is a big bonus if they have a detachable cable.

Also comfort is important.

Thanks a bunch for helping me on my way to the world of hi fi!

To me the XB500s are the definition of fun, but they're really bass heavy.

Thanks for the response.

How would those do with just an ipod?

and would the super bassiness mess up other genres of music? because that would be a dealbreaker....

they do look mighty comfy though

Could try the Creative Aurvana Live.  They're supposed to work well unamped.  Another popular option is the Koss Pro DJ100, but I've always amped mine.

The Sony XB500's are bass heavy, yes. But not excessively bass heavy. I mean the mids and highs aren't that very well composed, but thats what the XB700 is for. These phones are great with dubstep. I don't know about the XB500 in public. One day I'll wear them to school... one day. As earmuffs.

SRH 440 - but i think you already know about this. There aren't many quality closed options under $100.

How do the SRH 440 sound straight from an ipod with no amp? Are they revealing to low quality recordings? and how would you describe the sound signature?

The srh440 is a very efficient headphone and sound good from a smartphone.

The sound signature "feel relatively" balanced for a headphone at this price. Effectively one of the best headphone under 100$.

There's also the HFI-450 and the Pro Dj100. Worth considering.
