Am I crazy or is there not a big difference between HD650 with and without Fiio HD650?

I bought the HD650's not too long ago and bought a Fiio E10 to go with them.

I hadn't tried using them without the E10 but I just did and I can't tell much of a difference. I mean there is a difference but it's not a 100$ difference.

Is the E10 really too weak for these hungry headphones?

Are there any good amps that would go with the E10 if I used it as a DAC?

Also, these things seem to be changing every day. First days the bass was almost overwhelming, now it's barely there. I've listened to them for maybe 50 hours or so.

Mine get pushed just fine with my zo2. Adds a little umph to my low end also.

Welcome to the land of diminishing returns. It's a fact of audiophile life. The HD650 never really tempted me until I heard it with a top-notch amp, but I won't go so far as to say the Burson makes them 10x better than the Fiio.

Which Burson?

EDIT: Nevermind, I saw that you had the HA-160.

How do you like it? What does it add to the experience?

(I'm new to all this, any explanation is helpful)

There are some very extensive reviews of the HA-160 on head-fi. I find that it makes the HD650 much faster overall, and tightens-up the bass in particular.

If you're looking for a less spendy option, search for reviews of the Matrix M-Stage, a Dynalo design like the Sheer Audio HA-006, or the Bottlehead Crack if you're the DIY type.

Keep in mind that if you dislike something about the HD650, no amp will fundamentally change its sonic character. The best thing is to go to a head-fi meet, and find out what you really like and what you think is worth paying for.
