I believe it is custom software made by Ibasso/Rockchip with the DAC of the IBasso in mind. You won't be able to play 24/192 kHz files on the Samsung S3.

I didn't know that USB can support 24/192, I always had an idea that it is limited to 24/96

Thanks for the hifim8 idea, just found out aside from 24/192 over usb, they also have hifim8 LX with optical input instead of the apple transport function.

Dx100 - optical- hifim8 lx = 'portable' balanced rig lol

Well....played with the unit over the weekend listening with the SE353 and 4R.....awesome SQ for sure as is from the unit (great tip in the OP about keeping a 6.3mm to 3.55mm plug in for IEMs to take them in and out).  Very happy with the unit but for those wondering about using the unit for streaming music apps....I can say so far it's pretty much useless for that purpose.  I've tried MOG and TuneinRadio even and couldn't get music to buffer to any sort of acceptable use.....it's a combination of the poor wifi implementation and the old android software I think.  But for my purposes of using it to play FLACs, I got no complaints.  Soon as I get the Sony Walkmans in here (Getting a Z and F from Japan) I'll compare and contrast.....my feelings are the iBasso will be better....now to wait till the MK3-B comes back in stock @ ALO in black color and then I can complete the to go rig with the LCD-2.

I tried the RX Mk IIIb with my DX100 and was a bit disappointed really. Coming from the pitch black background of the DX100, the Mk IIIb is a bit noisy. The Heir Rendition 1 (single ended tho) fares much better in this regard, but I cant seem to stop ogling the RSA Intruder...

Sorry if I missed it earlier, but what headphones/earphones did you try with the dx100/rxmk3b combo?

 

I've got a pair of lcd3's, and the dx100 performs admirably with them for being a stand-alone DAP, but I'm in the market for a portable amp to pair with it, and was thinking that the rxmk3 would be the one...

Look into the Triad Chris that is the better amp :). Also get a good PSU to power it and it will crush the MKIII.

Thanks for the suggestion Lee! I assume you're talking about the triad L3?

 

That with a power source might be a bit out of my budget (I know that sounds silly for someone with LCD3s to be saying) since it seems that would be gettng into the $1000+ price range, and at that point I think I'd get better value with a solid desktop amp.  The other thing is that that L3 + DX100 seems to me to be too bulky to be portable (even though I'm just going to be using it around the house), so I'm mostly looking at the RX-mk3b, Vorzamp, and the portaphile 627.

 

The LCD3s don't need a ton of juice so I'm hoping that I can get away with a TOTL portable amp that can provide clean power. The amps I'm interested in are all in about the same size/price range, and I'm giving the slight nod to the rxmk3 because I hear that the LCD3s sound really good balanced, but I want to learn more about the other amps.  Whatever I end up doing, I'll write a brief review when I get the amp + DX100 + LCD3 combo going.

I find that for most uses, the DX does just fine. If I want a little different sound I go to the Intruder, which is very powerful but offers clean sound and very layered or the fi.Q. The Intruder being more portable of course than the fi.Q. With the DX, Intruder or the fi.Q, I get a nice black background and layered open sound. On the DX, I have substituted some non polar Black Gates for the stock caps.

Yeah the Triad is a bit big. About the same size as the DX100. I strictly use it at my desktop and wow does it blow me away. Just takes your music to a whole different level. The best way to describe the amp is dynamic. King of dynamics, just handles it effortlessly. Works great on IEMs and full size heaphones. Very good volume pot for low volume listening without channel imbalance.

Sorry, that was with my Heir 8.A. With a friend's HE-500 there was still a slight hint of noise, but nothing too disturbing. The MK IIIb was spectacular with the HE-500 once the music started playing.

Yeah I knew about the hiss with the MK3-B with IEMs....from what I read, that is completely not suitable for that use.....IMO there are much better choices out there if you're looking at amps for IEMs Ifrom what I gather and heard, I'm loving the pico slim).  I am interested in pairing the LCD-2 to the iBasso through the MK3-B.  The LCD-3 I got stays @ home with the balanced amp/source for desktop listening.

My DX100 review is finally up. It's taken 3 months to get my thoughts together, which is a shame as the DX100's performance and abilities were obvious from day one. RMAA and square wave performance will be updated too. Overall, apart from the dismal UI speed and hardware response, this is THE player. 

 

There is no need for an external amp at all. I've not used a piece of portable gear that performs like this does. From perfect volume balance to its ability to treat any headphone almost as a straight cable, this thing sings.

The DX100 has spoiled me - any hint of noise or hiss absolutely disqualifies an amp for me and my 8.A's aren't even that picky. So I'm looking for an amp suitable for (c)iems, absolutely noise free and preferably with a footprint similar to the DX100 so I can stack them. Oh and since it has to actually be an improvement over the already damn good DX100, my choices are somewhat limited.

 

Ahh, who needs money anyway?
