iBasso DX100:24 bit for bit, PG 1> Reviews & Impressions, Downloads, VIDEO, NEW Firmware 1.4.2. - Page 597

I hoped someone else would do this but it's apparent that no one else is volunteering. I'm currently writing this from work (my second job) so if anyone wants to take the reins please feel free.

The list of people who would like to contribute towards buying figgie a DX100 is this:

1. seeteeyou

2. lee730

3. tupac0306

4. wolfen68

5. chrisSC

6. sorensiim

7. temporaryname

8. TheUbiquitous

9. dsalomon

10. Randall DZM

11. DannyBai

12. spkrs01

13. flu_fighter

14. hkppl

15. Jalo

16. figgie

17. Turrican2

Our goal at the moment is $829 for the iBasso DX100. I will be emailing this list of names to iBasso and see what special rate they can do for us and whether I can post that price publicly.

Can everyone do me a favour and put down the amount they're willing to donate next to their name? If we call copy and paste then we can fill the list through consecutive posts. If you'd prefer to be discreet, feel free to PM me the amount and I'll keep it private.

Most of all, thank you to all of you involved.

EMAIL TO IBASSO

Dear iBasso,

On behalf of members of the Head-fi community, I would like to state our intent to purchase a review/debug DX100 unit for head-fi member figgie so that he can help contribute towards a working and efficient user interface and firmware.

It is a general consensus that the DX100 has amazing sound quality however the buggy firmware has been spoiling the experience for many owners. Whilst we believe the latest update is getting close to a well functioning firmware, there is still a lot to be done. We believe that figgie can help speed this venture with his experience in the area of Android app development. He is willing to volunteer his time and effort in order to improve the DX100's firmware for the benefit of the audiophile community. Needless to say, a final polished product will also greatly benefit your company.

In response to our proposal to buy him a unit, figgie responded with this:

with that said,

This falls under iBasso. If they could sell/release me a unit as a dev unit, no warranty. No accessories at a price that is not retail. I can purchase this myself. I can sign NDA's, not a big deal. But that NDA would have to be focused only on the files used for ESS useage and maybe the player. Definetely not the android build or the technical working of what is happening. If the DX100 could run ICS or JB, In my opinion it would run much better and more efficent. The trick is going to be the "ESS files". Unfortunatly to test that I need the hardware to see if the files are compatible with ANYTHING outside of 2.3.1. If they are, that is good, as that is what makes the DX100. If they are not, that means ground up build of the ESS drivers which means ESS involvement.

So far, we have 17 members who are willing to contribute money towards a review/debug unit of a DX100 for figgie. They are listed in the following post:

If you are willing to facilitate this request, please advise us on whether it would be possible to arrange for a cheaper unit-only price and whether your company would be interested in matching our donations (considering that this endeavour will benefit your product, sales and reputation). I will tally a total of how much the community is willing to donate and get back to you.

I look forward to your reply.

Kind regards and many thanks,
Jan (aka temporaryname).

Houbi -

I have the Beyers - you're gonna love them.  They're the best full size cans I've ever used.  I also have a new pair of Heir 4.Ais and I love them just as much as the Beyers.

By the way, for all who are interested in Heirs - I sent them an email asking if they were ever planning to bring out 8.Ais (non-custom 8.A).  They wouldn't give me a direct answer, but they did say "keep watching... :-)".  So for those who want that legendary 8.A sound (never heard them myself...anyone in Atlanta want to let me audition theirs?), they may be in our future at a hopefully slightly less wallet crushing price.  I was thinking I'd have to eventually sell my Beyers to be able to afford a pair of 8.As.  But, if they come out with an an 8.Ai and price it under $1k...I might just have to buy a pair.

You can request them. I know that I could get them installed in the UHA-4.

i love a wide genre of music

Just listening to paths of possession tune The end of the hour on DX1oo and hd800s

The double bass pedals and the bass and Georges growling vocals are a welcome slap

to the senses .

As old as i am i dont think i can sleep now im pumped LOL

Yes i agree it really pounds

DX100 also handles more gentle stuff like Adam Hurst or David Darling . Johnny

Hi

I truely love the T1's, allready. They're sounding great with my Essence STX, but i think the WA2/T1 Combo should blow my mind for ever. (I hope so at least smily_headphones1.gif )

Hi

That's exactly what i say, cry once, that's enough smily_headphones1.gif

I'm looking for a clear, slightly warmish sound with good bass with absolutely zero distortion. It has to be a "musical" sound and they should be kind of genre master (at the moment i mainly listen to all kind of Folk, Pop, Indie, a lot of Stockfisch Records) As far as i'm reading your review, the 8.A's should be my route to go. What's also important that they pair well with the DX100, i'm not planing to use an external amp tough.

My DX100 is already in Switzerland, should get it finally on monday! (Great job DHL!) smily_headphones1.gif

I use my T-1s with a Darkvoice 337 - and it blows my mind forever.  As good as the RSA SR-71A amp is with them and the DX100, the 337 with a DacMagic 100 DAC as my source is just absolutely amazing.  I hope you WA2 does for your T-1s what my Darkvoice does for mine. gs1000.gif  As a side note, the RSA SR-71A does a great job of driving those hard to drive 600 ohm T-1 monsters.  While the DX100 also drives them just fine, using the amp gives a better soundstage, more depth, etc.

By the way, if your tastes tend towards neutral sound and want to try some tube rolling with the WA2, try a pair of 7236 tubes instead of the stock 6080s.  Even better, if you can get them at a reasonable price, a pair of 5998, or 421A (these will be REALLY expensive, if you can even find a good pair).  If you do want to try tube rolling, make sure you do your homework about rolling with that amp before you try it.  I don't know anything about that amp...I just know what I can roll with my 337.  So, I'm just assuming that you can replace the stock 6080 with other compatible tube types.  The stock tubes on my 337 were 6N5PJ.  Rolling in a good pair of 7236 tubes was like night and day.  The amp had a very tubey sound with the 6N5PJs.  The 7236 gives it an almost solid state sound, but with just enough warmth.  For my amp...it's the best combination so far (although I haven't been able to find a reasonably priced set of 5998s or 421As to try yet).

Apologies to all for semi-hijacking the DX100 thread for unrelated discussion.

I experienced something interesting yesterday. So far I have always killed all apps before putting the DX100 to sleep, which usually lead to a 7 or 8% drain of the battery in 4 or 5 hours. But yesterday I forgot and didn't kill anything so there were like 6 active apps, and the interesting thing was that the battery went from 99 to 94% in almost 11 hours!

I will try to reproduce this and post results, it was a nice surprise!

I always do my homework before i buy something :) As faar as i could read in this forum, the WA2/T1 combo will be "magical". Of cource i'm going to roll tubes, but a bit later on.

What about the MicroSD Cards for the DX100, this one here should be fine isn't it? -> http://www.brack.ch/tabid/294/Default.aspx?ID=206084

That should work, as long as you format it to FAT32 first.  This utility works: http://www.partition-tool.com/landing/home-download.htm

Ok, great. Thanks mate

I use that very card in my DX100 as well... Amazing storage density. I remember getting an 80mb 5½" harddrive, so seing 64gb in a card smaller than my pinky nail just blows my mind.
