wow the gain is definately turned down a bit on firmware 1.2.7, i have to put the Volume on 253 to 254. Where as on firmware 1.3.7 i can put the volume at 249,

the Jds labs O2 on firmware 1.2.7 sounds alot more cleaner than firmware 1.3.7.

On most monitors, on high gain, I use between 195 and 210 for most listening. Again, it depends upon what I am listening with. Rarely anything near 250 unless the HE-6.

With PortaPros I would be around 180 to 185 on mid gain. My previous statement for high gain would be too much for PortPros but for some less sensitive phones it would be on. I have normal hearing and don't like to play my music too loud as I want to preserve my hearing.

maybe Poetic is referring to the Line Out Volume smily_headphones1.gif I use 235 to 245 (1.2.7) then control the volume using a Portaphile 627.. I don't use any thing higher than 245, because I feel it tends to distort -- too much loud/power i think

*I stand corrected

The Hifiman He-500 is very power hungry, that's why most here on Headfi, prefer to Hook it up through a Speaker amp ( Emotiva Mini x a-100) anyone that has the he-500 will definitely be rocking the volume up to 240 or higher,on high Gain. Give the He-500 what it wants and deserves and it will sound very dynamic. I find myself turning the He-500 up to 252 depending on what im listening to. The He-6 is going to MAX out the Volume on the ibasso and it will still want even MORE power. The He-500 and Audeze is the only headphones I find that should be set to high gain. I won't even bother plugging in the He-6... unless im using an external amp. Reguardless the He-500 and Audeze Sounds fantastic with the Ibasso dx100. Definitely an excellent pair

I coupled my dx100 with a RSA Intruder and my LCD2's are rockin' hard! If you want power and pitch black background in a portable form the Intruder will blow your mind (or/and your ears)!

.... and a small to medium chunk of your wallet.

P.S. my wallet STILL won't talk to me and it's been a couple of weeks!

Technically any source with a digital out serves as a balanced source.  I use DX100 optical out to a balanced DAC and amp...a great combination.

Quite true. I have used the DX with the Intruder, through the DB2 with excellent results.

That sounds about right.  I've kinda been preferring high gain for PortaPros, the volume in the 170-180 range (depending on the recording, occasionally higher).  This is with fw 1.2.7.  I think with 1.1.7 I was using low gain and boosting the volume instead.

Yikes. Low to mid 220's high gain on 1.2.7 is plenty for me. 250 is painful.

I don't find the HE-500's that hard to drive. I doubt I go to 250 unless the music was recorded at a low gain.

Just a wee note to say that Ibasso have excellent customer service. Sent my DX back to them due to an annoying whistling background noise. Returned fully fixed in really quick time.
