No worries. Thanks for your help anyway. I'll just use the andless app to play these files.

I mainly use Phonak PFE 232 and Heir Audio 4.Ai iem's with my dx100 on low gain setting.  I get a sort of whirring ticky noise between tracks, that might not be a great description of the noise but can't think of a better way of describing, it can't be heard once the songs are playing.
I'm assuming that its not faulty and some kind of sensitivity thing with the earphones, would I be right in assuming this?
In reply to my own post, the noise is more of a whistling noise and can be heard at low volumes with quiet passages of music.  Am I right in thinking this is a faulty unit?

I don't recall having experienced that in any form. Have you tried a different source, and have you messed with the gain setting to see if it affects it in any way? Is it possible it's on the recording itself - I ask because I had that problem, when I unpacked my old Pioneer receiver and started listening to it again I thought "man this thing has a noisy background" (which it does), but it was a while before I realized 90% of the noise was from the crappy recording.

REQUIESCAT

by: Oscar Wilde

        READ lightly, she is near
        Under the snow,
        Speak gently, she can hear
        The daisies grow.

        All her bright golden hair
        Tarnished with rust,
She that was young and fair
        Fallen to dust.

        Lily-like, white as snow,
        She hardly knew
        She was a woman, so
        Sweetly she grew.

        Coffin-board, heavy stone,
        Lie on her breast,
        I vex my heart alone,
        She is at rest.

        Peace, peace, she cannot hear
        Lyre or sonnet,
        All my life's buried here,
        Heap earth upon it.

For Susan Elizabeth Wall (1959-2011) - Requiescat in pace et in amore

They didn't advertise this thing as a fashion accessory. Maybe ibasso should've approached Dre for endorsement.

*edited post, because what I wrote was stupid*

I'm not a youngster at 54 (today actually) but still really appreciate quality sound. Sometimes I slip in the Miracles and find myself exclaiming out loud at what I'm hearing. Love it.
Happy bday ! Enjoy...I am actually too lazy to compare and liking the 1.3.7 just fine.

Ok, so I've installed 1.1.7 as suggested by Lee. I've gotta say, this sounds better than the others (1.2.7 , 1.3.5). Now I don't know if this is the power of suggestion working on my mind, but I feel this firmware produces the cleanest and most balanced sound so far. The bass is less warm and thick, but more focused and punchy. The very low end is there if it's in the recording, but it's not hyped as it seemed to be on 1.3.5. There's greater separation between the frequency bands.Obviously I can't a/b this because I only have one unit, but I can honestly hear a better difference. I'm lovin this.

I've got some dubstep playing now , and it's like I've got 2 high quality subwoofers on my head. It's the cleanest lowend I've heard in any dap.

I agree. I found 1.1.7 to have the most balanced/neutral sound out of all the firmwares yet I still liked 1.2.7s more fun and textured approach on the bass and the more 3D sound stage it has. I confirmed the differences with my MDR-7550s which are reference monitors so very apparent to me. I was initially a bit concerned on 1.2.7 due to the excess bass but in the end it was a nice kind of fun so I stuck with it :).

1.1.7 seems to be the one for me. 1.2.7 was good, and I'd happily live with that, but 1.7 is just so precise, and what my idea of hi-fidelity should be. I can see why this cost more than the Studio V. It is just better IMO

Wizard of Oz, just out of interest, which software do you use to rip your image/cue files?

I'm glad you like it. Aren't you happy you decided to give it a try instead of letting bias sway your opinion. Always better to just try it yourself and go into with an open mind. If it don't work well it don't work lol :).

Yeah I'm glad I didn't return it. I was initially sceptical that the firmware would have such an impact on the sound.
