Companion to SRH840 for studio? K271/240/701, DT250/DT880, MDR-7506/7510, HD-600/650 or SRH-940? - Page 7

Again - I couldn't see the sense in it FOR ME.  What others do is their own choice.

I'm not against modding at all.  My MS1i have been extensively modded - but I liked their sound from day one.  And what I've done is essentailly taken a very low value can, and without spending a lot, have ended up with something I consider significantly better.  Much the way people have with the T50rp.

I also think you'll find more people who find the HD800 is acceptable OOTB - so I think you're talking slighly different scenarios again (SRH940 vs HD800).

Anyway - it's pointless - you are not going to change my mind, I am not going to change yours - nor do I want to.  Enjoy your 940's.

zambz - here's the link to the HM5 review / comparison to HD600

When you eventually get your new gear, don't forget to post back and let us know what you decided on and how you find it wink.gif

Thanks so much mate, having a read now.  I'll most definitely be in touch when I grab my new phones.  I'm going on holiday on Thursday for 10 days so I'll be grabbing them when I return.  As such, my review will be a little delayed L3000.gif

Will look forward to your review!

And don't rush it (the review) either - it gives you more time to get to know the cans.  I've found that initial impressions can often be starry eyed - only to change somewhat at a later date.

Enjoy the break too.

You can get more bass out of the HD-800 if you're using a tube amp, as well you can roll the treble a bit.

It isn't what I  got in my mind. My idea , is that even with the expensive  hd800, you shouldn't make a fuss at introducing materials in the ear pad if this leads to an improvement.

I  got recently a PM recently  stating that my mod for the SRH940 work as I  describe it. I guess the guy didn't want to participate to this discussion.

I think this thread is about studio hps, and not so much about mods... maybe this is why the guy didn't want to participate to this discussion.

Hello my friends, back from holiday today.  Boy did I miss my SRH-840s, am listening to them now and lovin every second! beyersmile.png

Now that I'm back, I hope to check out the following remaining cans:

Open: HD600 (again), DT880 600 ohm (as opposed to the pro 250s that I've heard) and Q701

Closed: HM5/FA-003

My HD-280 pros will be up for sale here soon which will hopefully help fund the next pair of cans

I'm considering a minor mod to my SRH-840.  I would like to try put a thin layer of felt or material behind the earpads to tame the treble a little.  That's really my only minor gripe with these headphones.

Cheers

Meh, it's ok to mod the srh840, but not the srh940. You don't know what you miss.

The srh840 might have better bass  , but the srh940 beat them in term of details.

Such is life my friend, we will each like different things.  I will definitely give the SRH-940s one more listen when I'm at the store, don't get me wrong.  But if what I heard was accurate, I think I'll be with Brooko on this one.

In all honestly, I don't doubt that they have better clarity and resolution than the SRH-840s technically, but then again, have you tried running an EQ to toss out most the low end of the SRH-840s?   You hear detail in what's presented the most.  If I had really bassy headphones with a good, smooth frequency response, then I would likely get incredible detail in the bass but lack detail in the mids and highs .etc

If I run a parametric EQ and boost the highs by 5db, then of course I'm going to hear more detail in the highs, because they are louder.

Either way, I totally respect your taste and some folks at the store I checked them out at here loved them too.  Though it's a bit of a hit and miss with the 940s, you either love em or hate em :)

Cheers mate

Well, if you relisten to the srh940 please try to play with the position of ear cups or headband (my review  provide explanations for this) . You'd get a hint of how easily  you can make a change to the sound signature.  I'd bet you'd find the sound more natural.

Probably not interesting to OP but if but for the usage case originally stated the Fostex T7 looks like a contender:

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll see if I can find a place to try them.

I was in touch with the really nice guy who has put together the Golden Ears site and he was kind enough to upload his results for the DT880 which really backup my experiences about their harsher treble.

Here's the DT880 250 ohm model I listened to...

272

The 600 ohm version improves on this a little though (which again backs up what people have been saying about smooth treble on the 600 ohm version)...In addition, you can see that the mids are also smoother and more forward, once again backing up what everyone has been hearing here.

272

And below you can see the HD600 has a wonderfully flat frequency response...

272

Comparatively speaking, the AKG K702 (which should be quite similar to the Q701) looks quite treble happy and bass light, but without having heard these, I can't really confirm it myself (can anyone else?)...

272

If anyone can confirm the difference in sound for the AKGs then I think I'll have my decision and will definitely go for the HD600s.

Cheers

They are similar to srh940 , except for the soundstage according to reviews. People that are used to the k701 obviously do not care much of the mid bass hump of srh940, when they look for a closed alternative.

In short the k701/k702 are not for bass anyway.

The DT880 600 ohms , have a better bass than the 250 ohms version according to the square response for 30 hz at innerfidelity, but otherwise they are quite similar.
