Yet Another Recommendation Request: portable around $300

Hi All

I'm looking for a pair of closed-closed ear headphones in the $300 range. I though that I had found the solution in the B&W P5s which sounded fine in the Apple store but this isn't exactly a fair environment. Further reading on this site has pushed me away and my newbie brain is spinning with an overload of Denon D200s, Ultrasone 900s and a slew of exotics I've never heard of let alone seen (or are likely to see).

Below are my Use Cases, Music Styles, Sources and Personal Preferences. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Use Cases

- Traveling on flights.

- Music on my computer (FLAC encoded)

Music Styles

- Electronic (Jarre, Kitaro, Daft Punk etc.)

- Classical

- The odd bit of rock

- Podcasts

Sources

- iPhone 4

- DAC (probably from AudiEngine)

Personal Preferences

- Comfort is key as I enjoy listening to LOTS of stuff.

- I simply don't have golden ears nor the skills and the vocabulary to describe "soundspace", "separation", "brightness" etc. I'm a simple individual looking for good sound. I know that is highly subjective. I prefer the sound to be accurate.

- Um, that's about it.

Thanks again to all who reply and have replied to past questions. Simply awesome input.

if you don't need much bass/lotta subbass for what you listen to, the Brainwavz HM5 / FA-003 are great.

if you need subbass. Denon D2000s.

I echo the FA-003/HM5. They're insanely comfortable for long listening sessions, sound great for the price, and leave you with enough left over to invest in a very nice amp/DAC.

Sincerely,

Hi

Thank you for the recommendations. Hmm, I'm not sure how portable those are. It's an important consideration for flights as I prefer to travel light.

Does anyone have an opinion on the Utrasone Pro 750s?

Thanks again

I don't personally find them comfortable, but they're a better bet comfortwise than, say, the ATH-M50. They won't exactly amaze with classical either.

HD-25 I II. Thats it.

Reviews of the HD-25 I II are great but their portability concerns me.

Keep in mind that I'm looking to step up from my AKG 450s which have and continue to serve me well. I'm also not going to be listening with a DAC and neither is my environment wonderful (planes, trains and automobiles). I'm left finding a compromise between sonic performance and what I'll refer to as ease of use.

I don't have a wealth of experience with different headsets, but the AIAIAI TMA-1s are very portable, don't need to be amped, and they're excellent for listening to electronic music.

Assuming you want closed headphones.

Look at the new Klipsch Mode M40, I just purchased a pair for flights,  they are comfy once the headband is broken in. Sound is excellent compared to the other noise canceling headphones very nice and they fold up into a nice leather carrying case.Unfortunately, there retail is slightly over the $300 dollar mark, however they go on sale occasionally.

I would also recommend the B&W P5 for portable headphones.

Denon AHD 2000 is always a classic on here, however they leak a lot of sound, so if you are trying to be respectful of neighbors I would not recommend this.

Despite the fact that they do not fold, I find them very transportable due to their durability.  You can really just stuff them into a bag or pack without fear of damage.  For $150-160 street price new, they are a great value.  If you are looking for better sound and a better form factor in portable 'phones it will cost you more -- and that would be the Beyer DT1350's.

this actually reflects my thoughts on the Brainwavz. they are very light and can be tossed around. moving from those to Denons I felt the Denons wanted extra care.
As far as trains and planes go, they come with a convenient carrying case for storage if necessary. sound leakage is almost nonexistent unless you crank up the volume and isolation is insane. like i said before, these cans are fantastic if you don't need a lot of subbass quantity (especially since you're not amping them.

oh.

they come with an airplane adapter too.

it's currently 120 preorder. non street price. :-)

A HUGE "thank you" to all who have replied.

Given that this is such a subjective choice, it's now time for me to do some leg work and trial these recommendations out for myself.

The BW P5 is also a choice in this category; it's definitely a taste thing, but they're pretty easy to try out at any Apple store. I adore mine... they've got a dark, richy textured sound that works tremendously well for movies and games. Music can be, dare I say it, rather emotional. It's like an HD650 with the soul of a Grado in some ways.
