Headphone BeyerDynamic with different ohms and portable amp

Hello,

I read a lot of articles in this forum and i'm not sure to find the good answer.

In fact, i have two questions, one for the headphone and one the headphone amp.

Today, i have just my ipod or iphone with a Bose Triport.

This headphone is comfortable, the sound is not too bad but i would like to change to have more quality and more good sound.

I saw on this forum that we can use a LOD cable with portable amp and good headphone to have better sound.

I read different thread on portable amp (usual suspects amp and 56 portable amps).

I'm interesting by closed headphone or semi-open to listen my music in metro, airplane, train, at work or at home.

I saw a lot of thing about the impedance...

So i like this headphone :

BeyerDynamic T50P - 32 OHMS

BeyerDynamic DT1350 - 80 OHMS

BeyerDynamic DT 880 MANUFACKTUR - 600 OHMS

Three headphone with 3 different impedance and one semi-open... and only one brand ! I saw a lot of good headphone but often open like grado... and i'm not sure for ultrasone headphone or just the sennheiser hd25-1 ii.

I think beyerdynamic is a good company and quality is here !

For the portable amp, i'm interesting by RSA, FIIO E11 or E17, TTJV Slim,ALO RX Mk2, Headstage Arrow, HeadAmp Pico Slim, STEP2DANCE, etc...

Ray Samuel said me that the P-51 is designed for 32-40 OHMS.

And for the DT1350, it's better to choice the Protector or the SR-71A

I read that the Protector is very good for balanced headphone. Headphone BeyerDynamic aren't balanced... So...

But for the DT880 with 600 OHMS, i don't know which portable amp is good...

Is it a good idea to take the 600 OHMS instead the 250 OHMS ?

I read review on the T50P and the review aren't so good... but better for the DT1350.

But i think the DT880 is more comfortable and a big sound but semi-open.

So i don't know which headphone with which amp...

If you have some ideas, you're welcome.

Thanks a lot.

P.S. : Sorry for my bad english, i'm french :)

Vive La France.

For portable headphones, maybe stay with in the 25-Ohm to 65-Ohm range, you can still get decent sound without the portable amplifier.

You can still use a portable amplifier, but if the headphone amp is lost, stolen or the battery is drained, you can still listen to your iPod or iPhone.

In public you really want to use a closed headphone.

Something like the KRK KNS 8400 or Audio Technica ATH-M50 or Shure SRH840s or Audio Technica ATH-A900s

Hello,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

I agree when you said if i have a headphone between 25 ohm and 65 ohm, i can use my headphone without portable amp.

But if i understand, with a portable amp there is very big difference for the sound, isn't it ? or in reality a little bit ?

I see you have the DT770PRO (80 and 250 ohm). It's a closed headphone. Is it more comfortable and better sound than the DT1350 ? Is there a big difference between the 80 and 250 ohm for the DT770 ?

Is there any portable amp can drive a headphone 600 ohm ?

I saw for example that the E11 and E17 drive until 300 ohm. And the other portable amp ?

I read this review http://www.head-fi.org/t/433318/shootout-96-portable-headphones-reviewed-v-moda-m-80-added-11-27-11 for the beyerdynamic DT1350 and Audio Technica ATH-M50.

I 'm going to find review for the other headphone you give me.

Thanks.

I 'm going to find review for the other headphone you give me.

The word "cans" is English slang for headphones.

Amp is short for amplifier.

I'm guessing the 4 cans (headphones) I listed were intended to sound good without a headphone amplifier,

Bigger market for cans that do not need a headphone amp, over those that do need one.

You would not really need to spend more then $$60-80 for a portable headphone amp, to bring out their best.

Spending beyond more then $80 would give you minimal improvement and not worth the extra money.

I do like my DT770 Pros (80 & 250) they are comfortable and I personally like their bass thump, mids and highs are nice too.

The 80-Ohm has slightly more bass, the 250-Ohm more balance. I slightly like the 250s better then the 80s.

I really know nothing about the DT1350, so can not offer any opinion on them.

I'm guessing most 600-Ohm can owners do not use their 600-Ohm cans as portables, so limited 600-Ohm portable headphone amp market.

The O2 (Objective 2) portable amplifier might work for 600-Ohm cans, but the O2 might be larger then what your looking for.

Currently my vote is for you to get the KRK KNS 8400, good price and they seem to have a growing following.

The Fiio E11 should be a good enough portable headphone amplifier for it.

Hello,

Thanks a lot PurpleAngel !

So for you :

1/ A portable amp like the RSA P-51 Mustang at $375 is too expensive for a headphone (32-40 ohm) !

2/ It's not a good idea to have a 600 ohms headphone for portable usage :)

3/ Closed and not semi-open

But for example a DT770 Pro 250 Ohm with a portable amp (like the E11 cheaper but good) is a good choice no ?

I need to read more this review http://www.head-fi.org/t/526400/krk-kns-8400-review-impressive-150-headphone :)

After that, i read the Audio Technica ATH-A900s is not specially better with a portable amp.

So if i choose a portable amp, it's better to have a headphone which can open it completely with a portable amp !

Thanks.

Hello,

I read that the DT770 is a very good movie and gaming can. So for pure music ?

I read on a good french review :) that there is problem with the amp FIIO E11 : magnetic shieding !

This article says : When you plug an iPhone with a FIIO E11, you have big pertubations (bip bip bip) when you take for example the underground and your iphone change to 3G to WLAN to Edge to 3G, etc...

Do you have this problem ? Do you know a portable headphone with a good protection to avoid this big problem ?

Thanks :)

I'm sure the RSA P-51 Mustang would really bring out the best in any headphone.

If you had 250-Ohm headphones that cost $300, then the RSA P-51 Mustang would be more worth it.

Nice name brand $300 600-Ohm headphones would be very tempting for thieves.

Also headphones that are used for portables are more likely to get bounced around more.

I would guess(?) the E11 could decently power the DT770 Pro 250-Ohm headphones.

ATH-A900s do not really get that much better with a headphone amplifier.

OK thanks !

But i need to find some opinion on the FIIO E11 with it problem of pertubations with mobile phone :)

Perhaps it's effectivly better to take a low impedance headphone !

But i would like a very comfortable headphone :)

Thanks.

I read also on this forum for the KRK KNS-8400 : "I haven't noticed any changes between them when amped or not amped"

So perhaps i can save money without buying a portable amp :)

The iBasso PB2 from what I've read can drive 600ohm cans. Check them out and see if they fall within your budget.

Which thread was that? need to keep myself informed.

One advantage of using something like the Fiio E6 ($30) portable headphone amplifier is that the iPod & iPhone would no longer have to provide power for their headphone jack.

Which should make the charge on the iPod & iPhone last longer.

Also the E6 might (guess) come with a better DAC.

Hello,

I think the iBasso PB2 is interesting with the balanced connection...

But i'm interesting by the amp STEP2DANCE and for my new can, AKG K271 MK II or BeyerDynamic DT880 250 ohm.

So good association ? good idea ?

Thanks.

In case luckyandroid is still pondering.. I got a pair of DT 770 pro 250 ohm recently. Love 'm to bits, they do classical very well and some jazz and blues have made me revise my opinion that I don't like bass, with these I do. Running 'm on a clip+ which just manages enough power to drive these but I am on 90% volume most of the time.

Thing seems to be with budget amps that neutrality is difficult to find.
