HE-300, a little confused. - Page 2

It's nice to know I'll definitely be getting an improvement regardless of what headphones I pick, how do the DT-990 Pros handle vocals? Next to electronic I listen to a lot of acoustic/singer song-writer so true sounding vocals would definitely be a plus and from what I've heard from the DT-990 Pros they tend to have a V-shaped EQ which doesn't bode well for vocals in general.

Yeah vocals aren't exactly a strong point in the DT990s. For me personally, they do their job. I'm more about the rhythm and ambience of music than straight vocals, so they do vocals well enough for me. However, if vocals are super important, perhaps the HE300 would be a better choice.

That's the problem with headphones. You can't have everything in one can. There are tradeoffs. I will always prefer treble, then bass, then mids, in that order.

I think you hit the nail on the head there, I really am looking for a bit of everything in one and it's definitely not going to happen for me.

I believe I'm simply too inexperienced to know fully what I want, all I've ever heard up until now have been cheap IEMs, "gaming" headsets and these XB500s and with my music tastes being so erratic I have no idea what I really want in a headphone.

Based on that the HE-300s might be a more neutral introduction to audiophilia than the DT-990 Pros.

Perhaps you should start with something that's relatively well balanced with SLIGHT emphasis in certain regions. Maybe the DT880s are a better choice than the DT990s for you. Or maybe the Brainwavz HM5/Fischer FA-003...

Go ahead then. It's always wise to possess at least one jack-of-all-trades when you're into headphones.

It would really be useful for someone with both to do a direct comparison, wish I had audio shops near me!

TBH, people will have different opinions, as their sound signatures are supposedly quite different. It's more fair to compare two similar sounding headphones than two wildly different ones. Some people prefer warmth, some prefer brightness, etc. If the HE300 is warm, and the DT990 is bright... well an accurate comparison on technical merits isn't going to come easy. I would believe personal preference will sway the outcome. The only thing they have in common is that they both have emphasized bass.

I certainly wouldn't compare something like the M50 with the AD700... they are too different.
