HE-300, a little confused.

I was set to buy DT-990 Pro 250ohm headphones but I've recently seen an offer for HE-300s for $200 (rawrster), after doing a little research I'm a little hesitant to change my choice to the HE-300s.

My main question is, how do the HE-300s compare to the DT-990s and would the rev.1 HE-300s be worth the $200 price tag, or should I stick with the 990 Pros?

I do like my bass (coming from XB500s) however my music tastes are very varied ranging from Flux Pavilion to Yiruma and Frank Sinatra.

I'll also be powering them with a FiiO E10, thanks for any opinions!

TLDR; Which would be a safer headphone for most music genres, emphasis on electronic, DT-990 Pro 250ohm or HE-300s, powered by a FiiO E10.

I also just wanted to add a post-question, what are the major differences between the Rev.1 HE-300s and the Rev.2s? Or the batch variations.

I owned the DT990 2005 version and found the bass and treble to be way to overpowering. Or to put it differently the mids were missing o I sold it. I have the HE-300 and I use it with the balance OCC cable that ships with the HE6 and I love its sound. The presentation is IMO balanced, and enjoyable for long stretches.

That's very reassuring thankyou, I read a while back that most novice audiophiles such as myself start out wanting a lot of bass, I'll admit I've been craving more and more bass and having my XB500s for almost a year now I can definitely say that more bass is the last bloody thing I want now, don't get me wrong, electronic is still my most listened to genre of music but the amount of bass the XB500s put out is fatiguing to say the least, not to mention the incompatibility with anything but bass oriented music.

My first choice was the DT-990 Pros as I heard that even though they give ample bass for electronic they're also good all-rounders and my main worry with the HE-300s (specifically Rev.1) is I'll strap them on, launch up some Bonobo and be immediately underwhelmed and kicking myself for not getting the 990s.

Does anyone else have an opinion on the HE-300s?

i dont believe they are bass heavy enough for electronic but i haven't heard them.. you would be safer getting the dt 990.

DT990 ftw, especially for EDM.

The HE-4 is pretty good for EDM too, though I dunno how close in sound signature the HE300 is to the HE-4, though FWIR, they are quite different. Still, the HE-4 requires unobtanium-powered amps to drive properly, lol. biggrin.gif

My budget is $200 dead on so HE-4 is a little out of my price range, have been researching all week in my spare time to get the most out of my money and DT-990 Pro and 2nd hand HE-300s are my top two choices so far.

And thankyou for the responses, the HE-300s do scare me as they're a real mixed bag and the differences between Rev.1 and Rev.2s aren't concise.

You can't go wrong with the DT990 Pros for your needs.

I'll admit that I'm still leaning towards the HE-300s just because I'm a sucker for that Hifiman look, haha, but the 990 Pros might be a safer purchase, hopefully I can get a few opinions on people who own the HE-300 Rev.1 and 2 and see what they think. There's no denying I enjoy electronic but I'm worried the 990s might pollute the vocals of acoustic and other said genres once electronic gives me a headache! But going by the HE-300 thread (which seems absolutely dead, worrying me even more) the HE-300s are quite warm with them being compared to the HD650s which from what I gather is a good thing.

Also I should add, the only music I do not listen to is metal/rock (except possibly alternative rock).

I'm not really a fan of warm headphones (warmest I'll go is D7000), and its the opposite of what the DT990s are (very bright, though the Pros are the warmest of the DT990s due to increased bass that mellows the treble a bit).

I believe my XB500s would be considered ultra-warm cans? I definitely don't want another XB500s by any stretch.

The 300s have also been noted as being laid-back which I just can't fathom how that sounds in my head even looking at the glossary page, I'm picturing it sounding further away similar to good soundstage without the seperation?

I've owned the XB500 and DT990 Pros. The XB500s are as warm as three comforters on a hot summer day. The DT990 Pro spanks the XB500 to hell and back in everything but the ridiculous amount of mid bass that the XB500 has.

Their sound signatures are quite different, so noworries about them being similar.

Though I have not heard the HE300, its been mentioned that they are more bass and mid forward while rolled off on treble. That would make them more similar to the XB500 than the DT990s which are bass and treble oriented. It really dependson what you like. While the mids are recessed on the DT990, they are infinitely more detailed than the XB500, though the XB500 puts them more forward.
