USB sound card suggestions?

Hi hi!

First post here, and completely new to all this audiophile stuff, so please do excuse me if I've posted this in the wrong place!

I'm in the market for some headphones/a headset. I've had a Logitech ClearChat Pro USB headset for the past 5 years, and I can't really complain. I realise that the audio/mic quality of these are probably terrible, but you know, to a complete noob of audio, I liked them! Alas, the mic is starting to crap out on me, and will only work when adjusted to certain positions, otherwise you just hear static from my mic. Very frustrating.

So! I originally had a look around at some "gaming" headsets, was quite interested in the Logitech G930s/Corsair Vengeance 1500s/Creative SB Tactic3D range. That was until I found this place, which recommended completely different options! For now, I've settled on the Sennheiser PC360s, as they just seem to do the job, and were recommended in Shin CZ's guide to headphone gaming. Of course, if there is a better headset out there, I'm all ears (oh the puns)!

This leads on to my main problem. My ClearChat Pros have always used a USB port, but the PC360s have 3.5mm jacks. I'm using an Asus laptop, and my audio jack is already used by my Creative T20 speakers. In this case, it would appear that my only option is to invest in a USB sound card.

Can anyone recommend me a decent USB sound card? Is a USB sound card even the way I should go? I'm not a pro gamer by any standard, but I like my audio and mic to sound nice! Also, recommendations for headsets in general are welcomed! Any help is much appreciated for an audio noob! Thank you! :3

[Edit] I'm currently looking at the Asus Xonar U3. Is it good? Is there something better I can get for the price?

USB audio is good any way you slice it, and you don't sound like a picky consumer. wink.gif That ASUS one looks fine to me, just make sure you set your computer to its output of 16-bit, 48khz for best compatibility. I can't speak for any of those "Dolby technologies" it supposedly has or works with...I generally don't add any effects that color music or sounds...you probably don't want to do that if you're a gamer either.

Hey! Thank for the reply! I think I'm pretty much settled on the Asus Xonar U3. The only other thing that seems to be close to it is the Creative X-Fi Go! USB. From what I've heard, they're both similar, but the Xonar U3 pips the X-Fi due to the Dolby tech?

Thank you very much for the help! :3

Again, I have no clue about the special effects/features and if they're any good. My turtle beach card has nothing special with it--it simply works and does what I need it to. smily_headphones1.gif Enjoy your new card.
