I figured, though I've gotten several requests for pictures. I try not to bring it up now because I don't want to seem like a tease. I'm not really concerned about the whole identity thing, especially since we're talking about a picture of a tattoo, but I genuinely don't like my feet, so I'd feel embarrassed taking pictures. That's part of the reason for choosing that location: it's usually concealed.

Given that employers routinely check out people on facebook and crap like that I like to be careful.  Back when facebook was college only and required a .edu email to register there were companies that would hire college students as summer interns just so they could use their facbook accounts to check out new full time hires for them.

Muppetface really is a little girl nearing 30.

Are you tenured yet by chance?  That would certainly give you plenty of latitude.

Some blogs I read by people I mostly agree with otherwise come down pretty hard on people using handles online, essentially calling them cowards for not putting their RL name behind whatever they say.  If find it amazingly hypocritical given that the people who I've seen say that are in fact tenured professors and therefore are exposed to no risk no matter what they they say about nearly anything.

Nope, not tenured. Not by a long shot.

idk, when it comes to head-fi, I'm not too terribly concerned with things I post here having negative repercussions should they get back to people. Most of what I post here are audio impressions, ramblings about philosophy, pop culture nonsense, etc. Things like my being queer are pretty much out there in the open, not something I hide now. And most people are already well aware of my being a tremendous dork.

Still, I try to avoid getting too personal. For one thing I don't want to turn this into a vanity thread, at least any more than it already is (which hopefully isn't too much). If I flooded it with pictures of myself that would just be awkward, as it would be kind of camwhorish, and plus I'm pretty self conscious. Also it would be a bit awkward if one of my current students or coworkers found this thread.

Then there's the issue of creepers. I'm not trying to be negative about the hobby, and I'm sure most people on head-fi are cool, but being a young woman in a hobby populated mainly with guys, I have to be a little more careful about how I conduct myself. I like playing around, but I don't want to come off as being a tease or flirt too much, because some people might get the wrong signal or something. And obviously I don't want to give out personal info for reasons like that.

I really don't know why a lot of people are concerned with sharing their RL details online though... I'm pretty sure that if you look for my username online you will find out my name from Twitter, soundclick, reverbnation, etc. etc. and it doesn't really bother me in the least. I mean, I'm pretty sure I don't/wont have stalkers, and if someone wants to "steal" my identity there are better, faster ways to do it. So... I basically don't care.

Regarding employers looking at Facebook activity and all that, that definitely is not cool... but I can understand some concerns they might have (and I wouldn't want them to look at some pictures of me drunk as hell! hehehe) Still, if they found out and didn't want me as an employee, their loss! :-p

Yeaahh... thing is that you are in a position of "authority" and me being in the same situation I would DEFINITELY not be putting pictures of me all over the place!! LOL

Is "Creeper" a widely used word in the States??

(I swear I've only heard people say it only a couple of times... and most of them probably in Jeepers Creepers... :-p)

Well if I kept everything I said to specific topics like just headphones or something then I wouldn't have to worry as much.    I don't want to keep it just to that though.I want to be able to talk about whatever comes up and express opinions that may be unpopular.  OTOH Voldemort had people on the AMB forums talking about tracking him down (though probably not serious about it) and he just kept to audio so you can never be too careful.

Just what you do mention about your RL is way more that I'd be comfortable with and I don't have to worry about attracting stalkers or my personal safety, being a big guy and all.  I'm pretty sure your mere existence is a tease to some people though.  I can easily picture some lonely guy falling in love with you from just your posts, add in a little instability, and you get a pretty ugly result.

EDIT:  After writing that up I realized it sounds a little scary and it's not my intent to frighten you or something...

Two guys where I work got fired because of Facebook. They were mad about something that happened at work and started ranting about it on Facebook and somebody decided to rat them out and tell their supervisor. Two days later they were called into the offices and fired on the spot.

Personally, I don't mind sharing my life on the internet. However, I think it's a rather boring read for most folks though.

I don't drink.

I don't do drugs.

I don't even go to parties.

I don't get myself in trouble.

I don't do illegal activities, unless you count file sharing as such.

I mean, there's just nothing dramatic to report. I just sit here, in front of my computer, and I play with my kids. That's basically my life. And as a result, I've been reluctant to joining these social media things as well. I just recently got myself a twitter. I don't use facebook, or linkedin, or Google+, or whatever is popular at the moment. I just don't see the point in registering my name there, since I don't use those services, and I wouldn't want to take up peoples time by updating "Oh, I just spent 3 hours on head-fi" or "Time for coffee, and then a bathroom rest, then some more coding".

Is that legal? Were they competent workers?
