The diary entries of a little girl nearing 30! - Page 53

Dear Diary,

* * * SUPER CUSTOMS II CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION * * *

There are far too many customs out there to try to make sense of. I give up. Or maybe I'll just draw slips of paper out of a large prop hat. Or hide under my bed.

The EarSonics EM4 seems very nice. I'm now infatuated with the SM3v2, so I naturally find myself drawn to the company's top tier offerings like a moth to the flame. There's a certain rugged but refined quality to the EarSonics brand, a certain Franco-osity not unlike smoking in bed after intercourse. If characters in Godard films wore earphones, they'd surely be EarSonics.

I'm currently awaiting the Rooth LS8. If ever there was a CEIM brand that speaks to my particular brand of peculiarity, it would surely be Rooth. What sort of name is 'Rooth' for an audio company anyway?**

Due to the particular bent of my madness, I find myself disposed to a certain mindset that favors synergistic union, and because of this, thoughts of the Gui Ling CX8 have been ferrying about my head's peripheral space with not-infrequent regularity. Boths CIEMs are the byproduct of one enigmatic genius, one replete with super tweeters while the other gets super woofers. Quite a pair to my mind. The proverbial yin to a yang.

Gui Ling is a difficult prospect though, unfortunately. They have next to no representation outside of China, and doing business with them would surely prove to be an ordeal. Consider myself an explorer in this hobby I do, so in a comically misguided way I find the prospect of doing that sort of business enticing. I feel some ill-delineated urge to provide an account of the hitherto unknown, to travel new waters and chart distant lands. Sharing new findings with this community is satisfying in a way.

In the event that Gui Ling doesn't pan out however---or just maybe, even if it does---I'm considering other options. My second choice until this morning was the Heir 8.A, an enticing prospect with its smooth and uniquely musical sound made all the sweeter by the Wizard's borderline OCD attention to detail. Some of the latest findings though are a cause for concern.

Other customs I've just learned about today include the Minerva Mi-3 (I love the name Minerva) and the weirdo dynamic driver bass monster Wan Xuan i9 Pro

I'm really interested in the Canal Works brand. I'm not sure what it is, but they just really appeal to me. Maybe it's the cartoonish dayglo shell colors; maybe the fact that they're from Japan. Whatever the reason, I've thought about contacting them, but I'd probably need to open up a translator to try to communicate in horribly broken Japanese. As with Gui Ling there's that element of the unknown that surrounds the brand. I'm just not entirely sure how to go about first contact. Maybe Tomscy and I can team up and figure something out between the two of us.

Spiral Ear is definitely an intriguing prospect, but their refusal to deal directly with foreign customers is unfortunate. ACS is a more accessible alternative for silicone ear monitors, though I haven't bothered reading up on them much. They weren't particularly friendly or willing to talk to me when I inquired directly about their products.

Last on my list of considerations is the Thousand Sound TS842. It's relatively inexpensive compared to its competition, thoroughly exotic, slightly more difficult to obtain, and has an intriguing signature by all accounts. Regardless of whatever else ends up by the LS8's side, the TS842 seems like a worthwhile consideration given all of its charms.

That's enough of that at any rate.

XoXo

Wow.

Haha. I was right about that zone of euphony eh? I just love how it presents so much detail, yet so inoffensively, with fast transients but also great timbre. When I bought it at Jaben in Hong Kong, the first time I put it in my ears and listened for about 10 minutes I was a bit shocked at how thick the sound was. I bought it with some reservation but actually somehow knew it was a sound I would grow to love.

It's the earphone I show to my audiophile friends who listen for a moment and then complain about it being too warm, lush and muddy (It's funny how the warmth and lushness gives an initiial impression of congestion). When I show normal friends, they all love it. Along with my GR07 they are the only two IEM's that really get rotation with me anymore.

Reading your diary and thinking about the food, lol looks like you would go into 5-star restaurants/hotels, sit down and orders their best dish in the house to try :)

Yeah I want a guiling cx 3 myself, lol muppetface, group buy!!! I think kiteki keeps in contact with them and is waiting for the cx6 still.

I wonder why they are cabled like that.

My totally uninformed guess is that maybe the headphone jack on mixing boards and portable recorders may be on the right, since they were designed for field recording and film/TV production. If forced to choose between having a cable in the way of your dominant hand or having it cross your body and interfere with your dominant hand anyway, it would be the lesser of two evils. Then again, the headset version of the HD 25 1-II also has the lead on the right.

I do not know.

And the ear tips would clog with smoke, lending a brandy-and-fisheries tonal character to the smell. Er sound.

[Heir... Minerva... Wan Xuan... Canal Works... Spiral Ear... ACS... Thousand Sound...]

I think you like the challenge at least as much as you like the reward. Or maybe being deadlocked by options brings you a pleasurable sense of dilemma.

The Rooth and Gui Ling both intrigue me by description, but I still suspect that my future TOTL custom will be the Starkey. Partly because of its performance, partly because it's filled with silicone goop! Best of both worlds: Nice, easy insertion and removal due to the slick acrylic shell, plus the added acoustic inertia that only goop can provide. For various reasons, I am very interested in the quality of isolation that cIEMs offer, nearly on par with my interest in the sound quality.

Speaking of goop, have you had your ear impressions made? How did you enjoy it?

Somebody is having a nervous reaction to his freshly-delivered 8.A. I can't help but guess it's because he's now got custom IEMs that cost some multiple of the rest of his listening setup, and it's revealing the inadequacies of everything else. Poor guy. I hope it is just a matter of personal adjustment rather than because the IEMs are bad. I don't think the gossip about charts that's been going on here and in the Heir thread is helping.

I wonder if ACS has been distracted due to NAMM, which only wrapped up recently. The major trade shows can be overwhelming for small companies.

I only wish Starkey made IEMs that were as attractive as the American and Chinese offerings.

The Porta Corda III acquitted itself very well today, for its first outing. I had mixed feelings about it to begin with, but now I feel even more... mixed, I guess.

It definitely pairs better with the TF 10 than the UHA-6 does; there's more life to the music and the tonal balance is less dark. At the same time, it will occasionally fizz in one channel when the signal source is offline, and the volume knob is challenging to control as the amp lies on a desktop.

I had planned to make arrangements to ship the UHA-6S back to Leckerton for service, but I've decided now to wait until after the 4.A arrive, so that I can do some comparing of amps. And then get the iPod's battery replaced and drive upgraded. And then... well, plan A was to sell off the PC III since I don't really need two different portable amps, but now I'm contemplating plans B-F.

Someone mentioned having received the EM6 already... so I guess that means there's a new Earsonics flagship!

That new company Aurisonics is really intriguing me. They don't really have the prettiest design yet, but it's 15mm of bass directly to the ear drums! Tuning screw like the IE8/80! Ambient Port! No reviews yet, but I think AJ is getting one soon.

I'm game! PM me with what you wanna write, and I'll try to drum something up. Hopefully before I go back to internal medicine in a couple weeks, though.

XoXo, Gossip Girl --- I automatically added that to the to the end when I saw it.... what does that say about me? eek.gif

It's interesting how all our thoughts of the SM3v2 pretty much align. I find that it's the clarity within the thickness that is the true marque of a top-tier product. Body coupled with definition.

I was under the impression that only the faceplate was acrylic?

Yeah, I saw that... poor guy, indeed. But honestly, I'd be a little freaked out myself, too, but I'd have my nervous breakdown in private! tongue_smile.gif

In about *glances at watch* two hours, I'll be getting a chance to WIN a pair of T1s! w00t?

Well, I couldn't help myself and blew a gasket. Wonder how long it's going to be before I get my post deleted and receive my post deletion message from a MOD

eh, the guy was pretty much asking for it. rolleyes.gif the mods are probably secretly rooting for you.

In other news, I'm reading up on UV-sensitive acrylic chemistry. Off academic journals, no less. I'm such a nerd.

It reminds me of the Miles Davis Tribute in the sense that I no longer think it is all that great a product, but there's always a certain bit of allure to it. Given the opportunity, I'd still have it in my collection. Maybe everyone has been expecting too much. Please do let us know how you get on with it.

Hey, personally I thought the CKW1000ANV is very cool looking and extremely comfortable as well, The titanium housing has a very cold touch to it and I really like it. But listening to it side by side between CK100 Pro and RE272 (w/ Fuze + T5 as my rig of the day), it sounds like it is lacking in almost every ways technically and should have cost at least 1/3 cheaper (at least as far as SQ is concerned, oh, CKW is 8/10 of the price of CK100 Pro in the store I visited). I was having plan for the CKW, but it is very obvious immediately after the audition that CK100 Pro, though more expensive, is worthy of being called the flagship. But not the CKW.

I applaud you. The nerve of the guy! I'd be curious about what joker himself thinks of it all.

Looks like Mike just came online to check his threads. You know I don't mind someone constructively criticizing someone about a review and posting their own observations but bratty comments make me shake my head. Mike doesn't have to review gear for us and he only does it because he's such a hardcore enthusiast. I wish people would stop and think and remember that before they hit the submit icon.
