Your posts are a joy to read MF. :)

Pretty nice IEMs by the way, too bad I can't stand those things in my ears.

The shoes look just as comfortable by the way.

Those are awesome.  I'm tempted to get some; I eat about half my meals with chopsticks.

So, what's all the fuss about regarding V-MODA?

Is it some trendy head-fier answer to the popularity of celebrity headphones? I see the "celebrity = celebration, and they're celebrating YOU" line thrown around a lot. Is it the fact that you can customize them? Is it supporting one of "our own," inspired by Val's success story and his humbleness?

Val is very active in his threads on head-fi, and he listens and talks to his customers, and that's really cool. I'd like to have a conversation with him some time about his thoughts on headphones as a hobby (not so much a "lifestyle" as his branding might suggest). I'd also like to know how he feels about certain things like accuracy versus coloration and the state of the music industry today.

Maybe one day I'll set up that head-fi blog I keep thinking about in the back of my mind, become mildly e-famous, and then interview him via e-mail.

I may check out the M-100 when it gets released. See what all the fuss is about.

Why not meet him in person? You are in California right? He's a great guy. I met him at RMAF last October.

Negatory.

I lived in LA for a very brief time---as in a few months---years ago. But that's 'bout it.

Ah well he's good about being available so contact him however and I'm sure he'll be happy to talk to you. I'd be interested to read your interview.

Muppetface : Please take note that if you chose to open the EQ in the DX100, and reset the values to zeros and leave it open , the Android volume amplification, will be gone and the volume will be down and the SQ will be better, try it maybe you will prefer it.

I had the chance to listen to a VModa Crossfade M80 last week, when one of my friend came over. Got to AB it against the Stax. Well can't really compare them cos' one is over ear and one is on ear.

I have to say though, the M80 really sounds not bad, not bad at all. In fact, rather good. I think the vent at the back helps a lot. Rather linear bass, with a touch of emphasis on the midbass. The earcup doesn't form a very tight seal anyway, so the very low bass isn't very prominent. No weird ringing or resonances and no sharp treble, unlike on another Grado (I forgot which model, might be the 325) that I have heard. Smooth and slightly warm mid range with slightly laid lack treble.

Surprisingly good depth, I guess due to the angled drivers. It's surprising how they cramp such big drivers into such small cup. In front of the drivers, there are dome shaped metal plates with round holes in them, which are like those in the Audio Technica W3000 that I had. I didn't open the M80 to check it, but it seemed that the drivers are angled to the front. The cup is definitely thicker towards the front. And also, the headphone is very sensitive, so I don't think amp is needed, unless one is using wimpy DAPs to drive it.

The build is too good. It's like you can step on it, and it still won't break. Solid.

Then I swapped back to my Stax, then ahhh...the wall of sound, the details, the delicacy....all of those are back. I don't know if it is blessing or curse. I heard Stax and I fell in love with how it shows the music to me. But then, I realized that it's going to be hard for me to find something that wows me more....Well, perhaps my view will change after I attend the NYC meet. One more month and I will get to audition the SR-009. And a slew of other headphones/earphones, Senn, Grado, Beyer, AT, Denon, maybe even some FAD biggrin.gif

Didn't really get to AB M80 vs my headphone much after that, cos' my friend was getting noisy, and the M80 is too sensitive to be used on the DACmini. All in all, M80 is good for the price, I would say. Better than I expected at least. People shouldn't bash Vmoda anymore. What more, my friend put on his own design on the metal backplate, and told me that girls have asked him before about it. So I guess, apart from music, it can also help you in other ways. wink.gif

Maybe one of these days we will have to stop the Skullcandy bashing too, especially now that they have a Japanese acoustic engineer working with them (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXJz6stO2AI).

I usually disagree with a lot of things Mike says, but on this issue I have to agree with him.

I heard about that Denon news before but honestly did not think those renders were real. Looking at those IEM's though... its like a company decided to make an April fools joke into a product line. As far as I know Denon is only reallly well known with an older, 'sophisticated' customer base. Why on earth would they axe their statement headphone product and replace it with a flagship that would be so alienating to their existing customer base? I understand doing it for a cheaper model, but not the flagship.

Interesting to hear about the MA900. Does it do anything new or different? If the acoustic lens doesn't seem to be doing anything for bass quantity, how about for bass extension or control?

I've always been curious about the V-modas, and I've also kicked around a Head fi blog. Went as far as buying domain names etc.

I dunno. I heard the Mix Master yesterday, and I had a pretty open mind about it. I wasn't impressed. Boomy.

I had no idea V-MODA ("all caps all the time") was being bashed, to be honest. I thought it was something of a head-fi darling, with Jude and Tyll regarding the M-80 as solid gold within the portable on-ear category. I've seen more than a few posts calling them "Beats done right" or "what Beats should have been." Val seems to be a somewhat humble fellow aware of his roots and his ties with this community of people rather than a celebrity teaming up with marketing execs and the odd disgruntled audio engineer.

I've gone ahead and purchased an M-80. One of the white ones Val made (I think there's a total of 17?) ahead of schedule. To be perfectly honest, the style employed by V-MODA doesn't do anything for me, but I like the idea of it being durable enough to hurl across a region of space without incurring any damage.

You need this laser engraved on the side of your Vmodas...
