Ugh, not a nice topic.  My current laptop came with it so I decided to try it out.  Two months in, it froze and would not reboot as it had apparently crawled back up it's own ass and corrupted the MBR.  Yes, I know there are realtively easy ways to repair an MBR, but I really shouldn't have to do that.  Xubuntu was prompty installed.  Incidentally, this is the EXACT same straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back issue I had back in 2005 with XP - which was what led me to move to Linux (Fedora back then) in the first place.

 

Oh, and the damn thing (even with minimal Aero enhancements) eats up 1.3 gigs of ram in idle.  How quaint.

 

 

Um, what integrated amplifier is this? 

I'm gonna say two things, neither is likely popular:

- It's an OEM system. Bloat and bad images are to be expected. I've actually never had a home-brew "eat the MBR" in that manner, but I've seen OEM images do all sorts of nutty things.

- That "idle" usage is actually not the same as commit; all versions of Windows since Vista have integrated a feature called Superfetch, which is basically Microsoft's branch-prediction/pre-emptive caching feature. It pre-loads often used resources into memory so that Windows, and the entire system, run smoother overall. It also dynamically scales its footprint based on available system resources (so if you have 4GB of RAM and you see it "idle" on 2GB, and you install 8GB thinking you're just running out of resources, don't be surprised when it now "idles" on 3 or 4GB - this isn't a leak though, it isn't like say, Oblivion, which (I'm sure Maverick can attest to this too) will sometimes just runaway and want to open up a 10TB footprint if you let it, until it hits a wall and crashes (ironically that's actually a known engine defect in Morrowind, and Bethesda's solution was to make the engine flush it's cache when the game is saved, which solves the issue, as long as you save every so often). You can disable all of that and run like Windows XP, but performance gets chuggy, like Windows XP. To give you a frame of reference, between Paging File, Superfetch and ReadyBoost I currently have about 14-16GB "in-use" (out of around 24GB pooled) but my actual physical memory load is only around 1GB and change (which is exactly where it sat with XP before I upgraded). Sure, I agree with running a system "high and tight" too - but it's all relative. Sure, my Apple II will boot into less memory than my hard-drive has for cache, and run contently, but I don't want to use that computer.

As for idle vs. commit, fair enough.  Bu for the record, back in '05 is was an immaculately-built dual Athlon MP (non-OC'd) home brew.  Happened twice then.  Second time I blew my top.  Fedora ran (and still does run) on that desktop - which my wife is putting to use at the very moment - behind me in our office room.  But devouring your own MBR in the middle of the night during hibernation - OEM or not - does absolutely nothing to inspire any confidence in Windows 7 (thought I readily admit that it is light-years more usable than Vista).

 

 

They've obviously lost their minds at this point.  What an ignoble end to a once proud brand.

You know why the Chrysler 200 isn't bad at all? Because its no longer owned by Daimler ;). They took the most profitable car company in the world (at that time) and turned it into garbage. They even drained Chryslesr money reserves to to fill their empty pockets. I really like how the new 300 looks :).

I went back to see my very first post on this thread (I wasn't around in the Kiteki thread) and I found it on page 85, which was about 8 months ago. Crazy how many pages (and through that, how many crazy discussions have been had) on this thread.

Admittedly there are parts that look more brutal than in other sports, for instance the grounding'n'pounding bit. Also in japanese MMA (Pride) they were allowed to kick and stomp the head of downed opponents. Some fighters were opposed to that, others made it their trademark (Wanderlei Silva). All in all, for being a combat sport, it's fairly safe. As with all sports, injuries do happen, but long-term injuries are fairly uncommon in MMA. 

LOL, a post about MMA would bring me back from the dead. :D

 

Everything's just fine. Except for a cold that's been running in the family for over a week now. I have an important thing to do later on today, so I really hope I don't get a lack of energy later on. So far it feels good and like I'm on track to getting rid of the cold, but there's no guarantees for how I'll feel at 4 PM this afternoon.

Seriously.  I'm halfway through this and and doing it's best to make me dislike Japan despite the fact that I'm almost a weaboo and it hasn't even told me anything I didn't already know about Japan or Japanese culture.

Sony is making a fixed lens, fixed focal length (35mm F2.0 Zeiss lens) full frame compact camera, with a rumored price of $2800. Honestly this concept seems very strange to me. It seems to be coming from the opposite end of the market by giving serious enthusiasts / prosumers a small P&S with some stellar quality, but I don't know how the same ground isn't pretty much covered by the NEX series. I can see this being popular in Asia (all pocket battleship products seem popular there) but as the author of the post points out, will anyone serious enough to shell out $2800 for a camera buy one with a fixed lens?
