Speakers Recommendation

Thread Starter

Hi, I am looking for speakers for under 100$.

The speakers will only be used for music and some (not professional currently) DJing.

Now, should I get a sub woofer, or 2.0 will be enough?

Of course I prefer 2 speakers w/out a sub woofer, but do you think it's necessary? If so, what speakers should I get?

If not, I thought of Creative Gigaworks T20 and Bose Companion 2. What do you think?

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately they aren't sold in my country, thanks though. Any other suggestions?

For under 100 dollars you're not going to find anything really great. I'm currently rocking Altec Lansing speakers that have the mid drivers pointed down at the desktop. It kind of muddies the mids but it makes the soundstage pretty expansive. I like it. Especially since they have 4 tweeters pointed at my head, so the highs are nice and clear. For under 100 dollars, Altec Lansing makes some pretty good arguments, but the safe choice in computer speakers is the Klipsch Promedia 2.1, which are roughly twice what you want to spend.

The Gigaworks T40 seem promising - I haven't heard them myself but I don't find too many negative reviews on them so they would be on my list of competitors. However, they run typically over 100 bucks, and there's no subwoofer option. I prefer having a sub to get more bass extension but with computer speakers, that usually means that some of your lower mids are going to be coming out from under your desk (if you turned the "treble" switch all the way down, you'll hear some vocals coming from the sub.)

I see fewer reviews on the T20, but the T20 is basically a T40 with two fewer 2.5" drivers. I'm always a fan of more drivers over fewer for computer speakers (mine have two tweeters per satellite... ) since the drivers themselves are so small, but four 2.5" drivers are hardly necessary.

Bose Companion - wholly unnecessary spending and you're getting a single 2.5" driver per satellite and no tweeter. They're supposed to have some kind of special DSP that makes the soundstage large and expansive but I didn't notice anything like that. I don't even think they look that nice.

Will I really notice any difference between T20 and a 2.1 system with sub? Because I really like how T20 look, will they be good enough for beginner DJ?

Haven't found these speakers in my country. Any other suggestions please? My options are:

1) T40

2) T20

3) Harman Kardon Sticks

Are there any other suggestions in that price budget? (70-150$)

Hi,

Don't know how youfeel about this but when I was a "starving student" I would look for gear second hand.  You can get some good deals and your money may go farther that way.  Just a suggestion.

Thanks, I'll take a look although I need to find the speakers I want first..

The Sound Sticks are pretty good. Harmon and Kardon was a pretty reputable company, and I'd say they still are although a lot of their line seems to emphasize style over utility. The Sticks have been used before as a benchmark for other speakers - I believe it was PC Mag that did so. I like them well enough although I think they were overpriced for the sound. Prices may have dropped which would make them worthwhile. Choosing between the Sticks and the T40 I'd go with the T40. Between the Sticks and the T20... I'd probably go for the Sticks. The quality on the Sticks might even be better than the T40 (I've heard the Sticks but not the T40) but I'm a bit of a sucker for four 2.5" drivers + 2 tweeters, versus eight 1" drivers.

T40 will cost me 220$ (instantly) and Harman Kardon will cost 180$ (with shipping). Which one to take? Or maybe even the T20 - 120$ (instantly)?

The T40 on Amazon runs ~150 USD, shipped just FYI. $120 for the T20's I think is overpriced.

Amazon  doesn't ship the T40 internationally.
