Audio Technica M50s - Good to start with?

Hi,

I'm not an audiophile by any stretch but upon hearing how much better music can sound with high-quality headphones, I felt tempted to listen for myself. I've never bought a pair of actual headphones before, only IEM's and earbuds. My main question is whether or not it is worth the money to get the Audio-Technica M50s headphones when I will only be using them for music-listening and gaming purposes, mainly out of my laptop and Zune HD.

I've heard that in order to really make the headphones worth it, you need higher quality equipment as well. Would I do better to get a slightly cheaper set of 'cans'? I'm fine with spending $150 or less, but preferably no more. I usually listen to alternative, acoustic, classical, and hard rock.

Thanks

The M50's are well made, but many feel they are overpriced for what you get.

Take a look at the Sony ZX700, the KRK 8400, Creative Aurvana Live and Shure 440 and Shure 840 headphones.  There is plenty of information regarding these here at head-fi.

I think they sound great with my iPhone and macbook but I do wish I waited, saved my money and bought something a little higher end like the AKG 701's or the HD 650's..

Personally, i don't think they are overpriced, i don't like them but technically they are very good and worth even 200$ imo, but there are, imo, much more fun and better headphones for the price.

The HFi780 imo, is much better than the M50 for your music genre and for gaming. The srh840 is effectively an excellent headphone too, less fun but more balanced and with more natural sounding.

With open headphone, in your price range, you can try the HD558.

Thanks for the replies, upon further consideration, I'll most likely purchase the HFi780 off Amazon, and return them if I'm dissatisfied.

ironic? I think not, Most of the one's that know a lot and help aren't on full sized headphone forums...but on regular discussion forums. Your english has no problem mon amie! Je parle anglais et vous parlez Francais et bonne Anglais. Je prends un classe francais.

Whatever it is. Your suggestions are always good and your English is fantastic. I couldn't even tell you apart at the start.

I'll second the KRK KNS-8400s.  I've had the M50s twice and found them to be boring and unremarkable.  The 8400s are a steal for $120, and I've tried a LOT of headphones.

The M50 was the headphone that sprung me into the world of full sized after being so disappointed with the AD700. I think at around $100-125 the M50 are a good  buy. After around that price range there is some more competition

$249AUD down here for the Limited Edition M50 ~ then again, the V-Moda M80 sells for that and I reckon the M80 is hardly

 the better headphone.

Should keep it's value too with the amount of M50 aficionados out there!

Well, thanks a lot, too much compliments for a day, lol.

Its always good to have a lots of opinions about headphones because preferences are always something subjective.

Getting back to the subject, The burn in of the HFi780 significantly improves the SQ.
