Sennheiser HD598 or Shure srh 990?

It is snowing and I got cabin fever and I am so in the mood to pick up a nice headphone. I listen primarily to Classical (symphonies, piano mostly), Jazz and Acoustic Folk (think Mary-Chapin Carpenter).

My source is my iPod 160GB Classic and most files are lossless files about 256 bit rate. I also have an Fiio E6 and PA2V2 amps which I use the Fiio L9 cable (so much better sound)

Anyway, I found the Shures for $199 and the Senns for $219....any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, I haven't heard the 940, but I think the open nature of the HD598 would lend itself to classical recordings better.

the hd598 is great for classical and jazz.... Incredible soundstage! Never heard the Shures but I think you should buy the HD598 anyway..

For Jazz/classical, the HD598 is better than the SRH940 imo, for acoustic i m not so sure, but the HD598 is still very good.

I'm assuming you were asking about the SRH-940?  Looks like you already made your choice, but I might as well reply since this could be useful for others since I have some similar items.  Can't compare it to the HD-598, but to the HD-600 it's a bit of a toss-up.  For acoustic singer-songwriter I flat out prefer the 940.  Brighter, higher resolving, more detailed for all those nuances of touch in the handling of the guitar and such.  For jazz and classical it's harder to say.  The same applies in terms of detail, yet it lacks power in the bass frequencies, which makes it sound anemic.  It also has a smaller soundstage, which I find is perfectly acceptable for jazz, but not ideal for classical.

Thanks Litho...just as I suspected. I still might get the 940 because they can be had for $199 and they are a closed can, which I am use to. I went with the Senn HD598 because I never had an open can before and I was looking for a wider soundstage compared to a closed can. From what I understand, the open cans provided such a soundstage. However, I would like to get the 940 because there will be times when I don't want to disturb the spouse and my budget Sonys just do't cut it.

Thanks again.

Yeah, the SRH-940 doesn't leak very much at all, so you can crank it and not worry about it disturbing others.

I've modded recently my srh940, and I  like them much better. They are enjoyable with everything.

Well, I've posted the link in previous post (on word modded, should appear in blue) , but now that should more clear:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/591325/how-to-hi-end-ify-your-srh940/30#post_8081133

Basically I  get "better bass", more balanced sound, and improved stereo/soundstage . I  can virtually locate better position of some musical details .
I  was already before trying to get a better sound, by playing with ear cups position on head, but modding is even more efficient.
