Help me find some quality headphones that are pretty durable.

Hello Head-fi,

This is my first post and I'm quite new to headphones.

I bought myself the ATH m50's after some researched and have loved them so far. I've been on this site a lot ever since I bought them, and reading peoples threads has made me wanting more.

Personally, I want headphones that dont leak too much, and are closed. I don't have a problem with open headphones, but I don't want to annoy people around me. (Currently in the US Army and was deployed to Iraq. Now in Kuwait. We live in huge tents with around 50 guys. It gets loud at times, but still dont want to bother other people.)

My price range is quite broad. I can go from 300-600 dollars. Maybe 700 if the headphones are worth it. I know there are a huge variety of great headphones out there in that price range. Just want to see what people recommend.

Also, I was thinking about getting a portable amp/DAC. Been waiting for the E17s to show up on amazon so I can grab them. If you guys have a better recommendation on those too, I will put them into consideration.

I use my headphones with my macbookpro. Usually watch movies or listen to music on my itunes. I listen to jazz, rock, electronic, techno, classical, korean stuff, etc. Anything thats good to me. Dont have a peticular genre of music I love. If somethings sounds good I'll probably end up buying it..

Hope you guys can help me out.

Thanks for your time.

+1, I also think they will match your needs, both pack much promise in bass.

I'd suggest Ultrasones before the Denons personally.

While they both sound very good, the Denons don't seem like they would last very long under extraneous wear and tear. There is also major reports on the screw that holds the cups onto the headband (some quick searching will show you what I'm talking about).

Now the Ultrasone line would sound very good from your MBP, be pretty cheap if you go with a hfi-580, and I would like to believe that they are pretty indestructible. Plus, in my opinion, they do a sliiiiiightly better job at isolation, but not as much comfort unfortunately.

My 2 cents, having personally owned the Ultrasone HFI-580's, Pro 900's, and Denon ahd2000.

Just slightly for you? HFi580 has a much better isolation, but D2000 is much more comfortable for long period imo.

You have a very good price range but if you want a truly sturdy headphones its often more cheap headphone that are concerned. The pro900 is effectively very sturdy but maybe not the best for all your music genre. You can also try the HFi780 or the DT770pro.

Thank you all for your input.

I've heard that the Ultrasone pro900s have great bass but that the mids are not so great. I've heard people post that they are good for listening to rock, metal, and other genres of music where bass is prevalent, but not so great when listening to jazz, classical, and more vocal music. I listen to practically anything so I dont really want to be missing out.

But then, I've also heard that as they get burned in they become slightly more well rounded.

It might be super sandy and not the most sanitary of conditions here, but sound quality and comfort come first, before sturdiness. I try to keep my quality belonging away from all the sand that blows through. (although that is next to impossible. It's amazing where dust can go)

I'll try looking at the dt770pro too. Sennheiser and AKG look quite nice but they are mostly open cans.

BTW whats the difference in the HiFI and pro line of ultrasone?

Pro900 have effectively recessed mids and not a very good all rounder.

If you can bear on-ears headphones, you should try the HD25, ugly but build like a tank and have a very forward and aggressive sound, a very good all rounder, but on-ears.
