Do i need a dac?

ok, i'm not real bright on this subject so here goes

i have my system set up as thus   foobar>creative titanium hd >lyr>hd650's

what im confused about is isnt a dac the same thing as the creative titanium hd?

i've got the scratch to buy a bitfrost but do i need one, would it be overkill or doubeling up?

im quite happy the way my system sounds now but always looking to do better

would i be better served by saving a little more and upgrading to maybe a pair of audeze ?

i read the forum posts but a lot of it is way over my head

any help would be appreciated thanks

So do you have music playing or no? Is this your sound card you are talking about? Getting a dedicated DAC can be beneficial and of course it depends on what you are looking for. I use a DAcport LX and find it far superior to my creative X-Fi Titanium. Simply no comparison at all. So in that I would say yes getting a higher end stand alone dac can help the sound. If you amp section is good then don't worry so much about that. Also the LCD2s are nice and would be a nice upgrade to the HD650 AFAIK.

If you were to get an external DAC it would most likely hook up through USB. Just make sure it has good USB implementation. Forgot the word for it but that can affect sound.

If your PC or soundcard has digital output(coaxal, optical) then desktop DAC realy worth it like D100, Matrix Quattro, Bifrost. But if using only USB then you can try iBasso D7 and it willbe good upgrade over soundcard and it has RCA out to connect with AMPs.
