I hear the 580's are great for electronic music but usually when people say that they talk about trance, techno, dubstep and the such. Just wondering how they handle Brian Eno's ambient stuff and the like.

This is a review of a pair of free IEM's I recieved from DUNU as part of a give away contest they recently held here on Head-fi. When I recieved my package the first thing I notices was...

Best closed headphones I had heard - very flat response, almost no midrange distortion, very easy to drive (good for portable), good soundstage (definately better than K240), good isolation, but...

Overall excellent buds, very good sound quality, especially for their price, the medium set of tips fits exactly in my ears and provides a near perfect seal. Bass is very detailed, but not...

I'll keep this very short. They are very smooth sounding. Treble toned down so not so good for rock but have a magic about them that makes them better than mark 2. I use them with a '89/'90...

I tried playing some stuff (including some dark ambient) on an hfi580 in a store. I didn't like it for ambient at all. It was only for a short period of time so I cant really say much but they sound really congested to me. Hope that helps.

Ambient music would work better on open-backs.

I know your talking about HFI-580s, tho I used the HFI-780s with that type of music, It didn't have a issue with it for me, and sound good too. But I agree Ambient music do sound great with open back headphones.
Yeah, open back does make sense, oh well I was just curious. I just bought some HFI580s for techo, trance, etc. and was wondering how they would fare with ambient. I have my eye on either the HD 600 or 650 in the future so hopefully one of those will be better. Thanks.

Add the HD598 too. Doesn't hurt to have more options :)

I have the HD 600 and it's great for ambient like early Aphex Twin, The Orb, etc. Its tonal neutrality maintains the airy highs typical in ambient while not suffering from lack of bass or a recessed midrange. It does solidly above average with soundstaging and imaging, too.
On a lower budget I'd say the Alessandro MS-1i also does quite well, with a not entirely dissimilar sound signature. The typical in-your-face Grado soundstage does collapse things a little bit, but the sense of envelopment is excellent (sometimes better than the HD 600) and makes up for it when listening to ambient music.
