How would you all rank the soundstage on the HD600 in comparison to other cans? Much smaller than the expansive K701 soundstage?

Much more accurate than the K701 is how I would word it heh heh.

Cool :) Would anyone call the HD600 soundstage wide at all or just average?

What else has a great soundstage somewhere under $500?

And can anyone anyone elaborate on something they've heard that rivals HD800 soundstage?

Well I said this already but the K501's sound stage is noticeably larger than the 400 which is equal to (or slightly larger) than the K701. You might want to add that as well.

The 600 is wider than my 990s, if that helps.

Great headphones, just wish the bass extended further.  Would give up that impact for deeper bass

The FA-011's have a fantastic soundstage, strong and defined bass without bloatiness and plenty of impact, and fantasticly detailed treble without being sibilant. With EQ (for minor tweaks when desired), they come nearly unbeatable IMHO.

And for the price that's half of your MMX-300's you couldnt go wrong :D

If there's one thing I really like about the Stax Lambda series in general (going by a modified SR-Lambda and an SR-202), it's that they have this ambient, atmospheric quality to their sound presentation. Works wonders for gaming.

But in that case, part of it may not just be a generally wide soundstage, but how electrostatic drivers present sound. It just kind of flows into your ear more than it's forced in.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I just wanted to get a confirmation on the sound leakage because you didn't mention it in your post. The FA-011 being an open design are you sure they won't leak too much sound?

Forreal?

That was one of my biggest fresh airs with the FA-011, my only headphone before that was the M50 and it had all the continental sub-bass but it was flabby and had no impact, which i hate ;/

Now I've since (attempted) to upgrade from them and only found side steps in several directions.

I still get a large portion of head time with the FA-011's regardless of owning technically superior headphones.

Oh yea. thanks!

by the way, have you heard the HD-598's? If so, how would you compare the soundstage to the K400s/500's?

I was surprised, I also thought they would leak a lot when I bought them since they were my first open phone, but they don't leak hardly any more than my denons or my M50's which are closed back.

I wouldn't plan to take them outside though, they feel a little brittle, i've never dropped them but if i did I have a feeling they would break or crack. They are definately a "use inside and enjoy" headphone rather than a headphone I drag around.

I have the JVC-FXC-51's for that, which also have a fantastic soundstage by the way for a $40 IEM (which is why I have them, yummy soundstage :)) I'd say they rival closely to the FA-011's in soundstage depth and width, just not as punchy and affirmative in the bass department. EQ however does wonders for that :D Great airy treble too, if just a little bit hot

I wish I could compare the K400 to the HD-598's on proper equipment. That would be a really fun comparison. I've never heard the HD598 sadly. There are two audio shops in the suburban town next to me. The Sound and Vision carries Denon's and Sennheiser's but doesn't have anything on display and the guy working there wasn't a nice guy. The hifi-house's people are very very nice but only stocks Grado's.

I've never heard a grado headphone but i've been told mixed things about their soundstage. I do think that their natural sound signature appeals to me but if it turns out the soundstage suffers on them it might be a poor choice for a next headphone haha

Just listening to that eponymous cliched vocal ~ Bocelli's 'Con te Partiro with Sarah Brightman' on the PS1000's ~ in terms of sound stage,

only the HD800 can keep up here, and even then I'm talking height and width ~ the depth is just phenomenal on these.

K701 fares very well as does the K601 but overall it's not this massive soundscape like it is with these big chromies.
