Soundstage lovers thread!

Alright, its official. I'm a sucker for a huge soundstage.

Nothing makes a bigger smile come on my face than a huge expansive circum-aural (concerning my actual head, not the headphone) soundstage that sweeps around and makes sounds come from all directions!

I have tried many a phone, and I've noticed now that however great each other attribute in the headphone is, I won't like it without an expansive and realistic soundstage.

My gateway drug? The Fischer Audio FA-011 :)

Any other sound stage lovers out there?

Tell me your favorite soundstage can!

If it wasn't for the immense emphasis in the treble region, the HD800 would be on my head right now

We don't speak about the same headphone, lol.

Treble of the HD800 are never harsh and bass are really fantastic, deep, tight, textured...

You have tested the HD800 with which amp? a first HD800 batch or not?

Is that how you actually perceive the hd800s, or are you reciting the standard dissenter criticisms?

Try overlaying headroom FR graphs for the Hd800, hd600, and hd650. I imagine you will be quite surprised by the objective measurements of both the top and bottom ends of the graphs. (Note also that there are virtually no core frequencies played by any natural instrument over 5Khz - excepting certain pipe organs)

The chorus of misinformation on this site is a perpetual disappointment.

Tyll did a write up on the HD800's and he had a bit of sensitivity with the treble on the HD800's when he did extensive demo'ing

Not saying that he couldn't be wrong, but it's all subjective

I trust his reviews and tastes though

and he's not the only one that's said that

The AKG K400 EP. It's awesome!

The AD700 is large but it's 2 dimensional and not particularly open sounding in comparison. But it sounds great (in its own right) out of an iPod, a feat the K400 will never be capable of. The K400 is supposed to be the most difficult to drive AKG K4/5/6/7 phone, even after the K501. I wonder what will become of it's soundstage when I get a worthy source heheh evil_smiley.gifeek.gifbiggrin.gif

Has anyone tried the FA-011?

I'm wondering if there's another headphone that has a larger soundstage for under the $500 region

No although I'd like to. Honestly they look a lot nicer in real life than on the product page, understating that red to a more brownish color looks great.

What amp would be enough to drive the K400's significantly?

I really want to try those out

I certainly have great respect for Tyll and the fine work he does on innerfidelity, but the regularly repeated criticisms about the 800's trebles (and bass) just don't see to line up with the graphs.  Figured I'd go ahead and post one so you can see what I'm talking about:

This link also contains a nice resource discussing the core frequency range of most instruments/voices: http://www.listenhear.co.uk/general_acoustics.htm

Graphs vary from headphone to headphone no? And most of all, graphs tells only half the story.
