I recently upgraded my STX to a Bifrost/Valhalla set-up in plans to use the STX in my carPC. Slight problem though... the STX is PCI-E and the carPC mobo is PCI... uhg.
With that said, my car setup will be PC->sound card->JBL MS-8->JL HD Amps->Seas Lotus Reference and Polk SR sub. The MS-8 accepts RCA inputs, thus I need a solid STABLE DAC to provide a clean output. I really liked the STX and have been considering the ST, but part of what you are paying for there is the amp dolby virtual... Are there any better alternatives for 2 channel? Price isn't so much an issue as long as <$300, basically just need a quality source. Also, I can look at USB as well but having a separate extrernal DAC will cause issues as I will have to get a DC->DC converter and mod it to work. While I haven't tried it yet, I also have a USB-SA Andrea External USB Soundcard / SuperBeam Microphone (linked below).

BTW, I make my own audio cables, so I can do aux-> RCA, RCA-> RCA or whatever.
For anyone interested, my build log is located here:

It contains a lot of the hardware if there are not enough details above. Also, the PC is running Win7 32 Ultimate.
