Beyerdynamic Model Advice or The Best Comfy sub-$250 set of cans

Hi everyone!  So, I'm not an audiophile.  I just like music a lot and I have a habit of thoroughly researching things before I buy them.

I am looking for a pair of ultra comfy headphones to Game on a laptop, listen to Rock, Pop, Metal and Hip-Hop.  I like classical too.  I want to spend under $300 for amp and headphones if possible.  I am thinking of buying a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro  I am seeing it for under $180 and I think it would be a good buy.

I had looked at Sennheiser 558s and 598s, but I would like to use these cans in public sometimes so maybe open back is not the ticket.  Also I am traveling with them so I don't know if the all plastic design is up to that.  I have a pair of Ultrasone HFI-700s.  They are closed back and I don't use an amp with them, but I do use them with a Cowon iAudio 7.  They sound great, but are uncomfortable to wear for more than an hour.  I am traveling to Korea to teach English and I would like to play games with my friends back home so gaming for 3-4 hours at a time would be normal.

I have read a few reviews on DT-770s including the Beyerdynamic guide by Zombie_X, but I am still a little confused about what cans would be right for me.  Perhaps I am overlooking some.  I have been thinking about AT700s, but I don't know how they will fit, being open and the lack of bass might not be for me.

Any help would be really appreciated!  Thank you!

Welp, sorry for the noob/unanswerable question.  I couldn't pass up that deal for the DT770 Pros so I bought them last night.  I think they will work out great because my needs are modest.  I bought a Fiio E7 and LOD cable to drive these babies.  I did however had a few more questions.

What do you guys do to carry around all this stuff?  Cans, amp, iPod, cables, myCharge and everything else.  I don't see that being very portable, but that's just the noob in me.

Anything else I should know about the DT-770s and the E7?  Like precautions or advice?  I am going to look for some threads about breaking in new cans in a bit, but I thought I would check in here.

I spent incredible amounts on portable amps, LOD cables, semi-portable headphones, etc. etc.

Now I think it was all a waste of money.

Sure, the PRO 900 + Ray Samuel + iPhone combo was nice. But for portable use it was insane. A IEM straight from the iPhone will do just fine.

Now I mostly carry the Philips L1 around my neck. It's extreeemely comfortable, looks better, has a headset and sounds great without amp. At home, I use amped and it opens up even more. But in hindsight, I am sad at how much money I wasted. Now I will never recommend Beyerdynamic or Ultrasone again...

Disclaimer: I mentioned these brands because they sound relatively poor out of a weak source, yet they are often recommended for portable use.

Thanks Ultrazino,

Thanks for being honest.  I can understand that, especially considering I got the 250 ohm model.  Unless I am going to be on a long train I doubt I will bring them around with me.  I just hope the E7 is enough to drive them.

Sorry for being honest, I guess. :)

I always kept upgrading and spending more and more. Finally, after almost four years (this is my second account), I stalled and realized less is more.

It might just be me, though.

Well, an E17 would be better - not only more power, but also better quality and more features (e.g. treble and bass controls) - although it costs almost as much as the headphone itself. The E7 will output about 10 mW to 250Ω (at ~0.01% THD at 1 kHz from the line input) before the distortion starts to rise significantly. Depending on your musical and listening preferences that may or may not be enough, although I have the DT770 and normally do not use that much power for music listening (more like <= 1 mW).
