OK scratch that. The DSM1's arrived to me opened box but actually sold to me as new (not cool!), upon opening the first box there were scratches abound and dust all over -- looks like someone took it for an extended trial. For kicks I plugged in the one speaker and immediately noticed the hiss -- as in nothing but power going to the speaker and they were still hissing. Back to Musicians Friend they go.
Saddened, I turned to the internet and discovered this review of the Super Zero's from 1995 in Stereophile. It seems these were actually designed to be used with a sub:
Quote:
what distinguishes the li'l NHTs from their similarly priced competition is that, rather than go for a budget design that "fakes" a real low end with a midbass hump, and otherwise balances a panoply of flaws into a reasonable facsimile of a real high-end speaker, the designer of the NHT SuperZeros has completely ignored the bass range and all the problems that it entails in a budget design. Ken Kantor has instead concentrated on getting the range from 100Hz on up as accurate and as coloration-free as possible—within the constraints of his design budget.
Wellp, looks like I wait until next week for the sub to come in.
