Headphone Advice Please! Beyer DT-770 Pro (80 Ohms) vs Sony MDR-7510 (24 Ohms)

Hey this is my first ever post and I would really appreciate some advice from you people in the know :0) I've read through previous threads and have not been able to find the info I require.

I’m lost in the sea of choice for headphones with their impedances and amps. I would like a pair to use in my studio for recording vocals/guitars etc, possibly mixing and also to listen to rock, acoustic folk and some pop music, with my MacBook Pro and iPhone.

I am using the Roland UA-25 Soundcard with a MacBook Pro (late 2009) and Yamaha HS50M monitors.

Due to reviews I am leaning towards the Beyer DT-770 Pro (80 Ohms), I have had a quick listen to a John Mayer track on these using my iPhone and was impressed by the soundstage and comfort. However, I did find them a little quiet unamped although some people say they’re fine unamped.

I’m also looking at the Sony MDR-7510 (24 Ohms), similarly priced. I wonder if these two are comparable? If I understand it correctly, the 24 Ohms are better/louder for portable devices but does this mean they’ll have a reduced sound quality compared to the 80 Ohm Beyers?

The Sennheiser HD 25-1 II have also caught my eye but they really are at the top end of my budget and I wanted to know that if I spent that much they would meet all my criteria.

I also need to know whether a headphone amp is required and if so which is one advisable?

Many Thanks!

Elliott

HD25-1 II will give you pretty much the best sound you can get from an "unamped" source. Even though they are 70 ohms, they are still very easy to drive because of their high sensitivity (unlike the Beyers). So if you aren't gonna use an amp the HD25-1 II will probably sound better to you, and can go way louder. They also pair perfectly with your music genres  L3000.gif

I haven't heard the Sony, but the HD25-1 has been a studio standard for years and would be perfect for recording/mixing because of their neutrality.

Ok Cheers I'll definitely arrange a listen, I've seen there are a few models/variations.. are they the same s

Spec and just different packages?? i.e with pouch etc

Im not against getting a headphone amp but don't want to spend more than £50 and am not sure which is suitable.

The only difference is that the basic edition doesn't include the velour earpads, and the Adidas version has blue pads. Sound is identical.

A cheap amp like the Fiio E6 will improve the sound, but don't expect a mind blowing difference.

Ok thanks very much!

one last thing, sorry..

I have just noticed that the cable is only 1.5m could you buy a longer one to fit?? or if an extension is used would you lose much in sound quality??

thank you for your responses.

I ve also got to get a Behringer HA400 Microamp 4 Channel Stereo Headphone Amplifier as I am recording a bands EP very soon, will this work as a desktop AMP ??

It has high output impedance (80Ω), so it is not ideal for low impedance headphones. It is better suited for 250Ω and above, but the voltage is also somewhat limited, so the maximum power output is only about 16 mW into 600Ω.

oh bum.. is there any alternative??? I've started to lean towards the mdr zx700 @ £60 with good all round reviews + ext cable it would leave me with spare cash to get headphone splitter/amp, cable and some 6.35 adaptor plugs. Thinking ill get a second pair (hd25-1's or beyer's) down the line.
