Need help buying headphones

Thread Starter

Okay, so I want to get some new over-ears, and want some advice. My budget is around $150, but going over by a bit isn't that much of an issue. I like to listen to a wide range of music, like rock, electronic, occasionally a bit of classical. I'm probably going to be using them at home, but they have to be durable, and I'll be listening to an iPod sadly :/ Hope that helps

do you want a closed or open style? do you want them to sit on or over you ear? an open headphone is usually going to be more airy and spacy while a closed is going to be more direct and sounds with resonate

do you want a bassy headphone or do you want a flat headphone or a bright one?

open, over, and leaning towards bassy, but not too overpowering

id say the senn hd518. it is also one of the more comfy headpones around your price. if you can stretch it the hd558, but its not as bassy, its more of a neutral based can

becuase the hd518 is open, it will rumble but it wont resonate being that its open. make sure you know that before buying. also note open is much more comfortable imo. i dont think a open can be overpowering :) but im probably wrong, there always are those rare cases

you can get the hd518 for $100 and the hd558 for $140 if you wait for amazon to drop its prices random days. the hd558 is def the superior of the two, but the hd518 is more bassy

other options are the grado sr60/sr80 but they have a very specific sound signature (look it up) and they sit directly on the ear, note that, it can be much less comfy

and there are the audio technica ad700 and ad900, but they are bass light so id stay away

and then the k240studio which are my preference, but they arent fully open only semi

u mentioned rock, and the grado sr80i definitely are one of the best for rock, and are bellow your budget. also try the sr125i if you're willing to spend a bit more.
