New headphones needed - advice appreciated.

I hate to do this since I know you must get this a lot of the time but I've come to the point where I just need advice.

Recently my Senn HD202's broke and having browsed this site I'm now bereft in a sea of options, none of which seem to cry out "buy me" with one redeeming feature that drags them above the rest.

Before I start I would like to state that I have no preference between the larger closed cans and smaller IEM headphones - I've been looking at both.

Usage patterns: Mostly for travel - I get the train to university daily so closed or isolating headphones are a must - I don't want to share my music with the world and the world doesn't want to share my music (if this wasn't the case I would have got the Koss porta-pros or similar).

Music styles: I listen to everything from one man and a guitar strumming through to red hot chili peppers, Pink Floyd, Cat Power and new electronica - both house style and newer fluid d'n'b style music.

Things I have looked at and budget: Budget is around £70 but I would be willing to go a little higher if it was worth it. All my previous headphones have been very cheap and broken relatively easy leaving me somewhat wary of spending a large amount of money on something that might break quite quickly (also I'm a student - large expenditures make my wallet very sad). I got linked to a recent buyers guide for price/performance and had been looking at things like the SRH 440, KNS-6400, RE-0, spider realvoice (almost impossible to get in the uk seemingly) and more recently at the IEM models such as the SE215's and the newer things from DUNU such as the Ares and Hephaestus (some of these seem very attractive in terms of value for money - some reviews place them as not great sound quality though).

Equipment: I use an ipod touch (most recent gen) without a portable amp (a sin around here!). I don't generally play with EQ settings either so I take things as they come, poor quality or not.

A lot of the reviews have been quite lairy with some of the IEM models about microphonics and clothing rustle - having not had a decent pair of IEM's ever I can't comment on how annoying this would be, but that and build quality have caused me to shy away from the RE-0 and similar models.

A final point: I'm very new to all this, while I understand the concept and intentions behind comments such as "Neutral" and "warm" sounding I can't say I've ever used anything that would qualify for these terms so have no personal experience of them.

To anyone who does take the time to read this and help, thank you. I know how annoying it must be to get these a lot and I would imagine in this place you do.

Dont worry much about the microphonics.  Just dont buy one which has specific problem in this area.

Regarding the RE0 its one of the best options out there but i wouldnt suggest them because it could easily not be your cup of tea.

I think you should try something balanced and an amp is not a must for most iems.

Regarding the iems vs full size: You can find good options of full size cans at your budget but might be a bit bulky if thar matters to you.

Go at the end of this  multi portable cans threat and check on the graph which ones have isolation above 7.5 and are below 110. There are good options.

Again if you care about portability size and looks go for iems.

If i was to buy an iem today i would choose something between vsonic gr06, vsonic gr07, soundmagic e30, phonak audeo pf01x and pf11x, Jvc fxt90 (prices vary)

There are so many other options out there.. Maybe even better ones but these are the ones that generally sound good for the most people. Not too bass no little.. no very bright nor little... balanced in other words.

Maybe my options are not the most isolating. For that people who use them in trains can answer but i have the vsonic gr07 which are average as well and are fine in the train trip i had from London to South. i use foam tips though.

Check these threats for more options (1) And (2)

For travel nothing beats a good highly isolating IEM. I think it is worth giving up some sound quality for better isolation. I guess the Etymotic MC5 and HF5 are probably the best isolating IEMs. The HF5 is likely to be over your budget though. i doubt any closed headphones gives as much isolation as these, although the Sennheiser HD25-1 mk2 headphone is a favorite of commuters. It isolates well, is compact, and has great sound quality. It is probably way over 70 quid though. I guess you might be able to get the MC5 for under 70 quid.

As for microphonic noise,if it is a problem,  it can be greatly reduced by running the cord around the back of the ear.

Thank you for the help you've provided so far, I'll certainly look into the headphones you've suggested.

Part of me is tempted to see if I can find a good deal on an ATH M50 and use that unamped since allegedly they function well like that.

The cost in the UK is quite steep and I would probably need to get a pair through a service other than amazon or get a used pair.
