If you were in the market to purchase a used headphone for which there are some known mods that can make it sound better then would you prefer to purchase it as it came from the manufacturer(no mods applied) ? or with the mods already done ?

I have a AKG K81DJ that I am going to sell soon but the DIYer in me is begging to make mods to that headphone and experience the improvements, but if that is going to become an obstacle in selling this headphone then I’d rather not do it. So just want to get some real world feedback…

Typically I would prefer original config but I got my SRH440s from an HFer with 840 earpads and a straight cable. I don't consider that modding but something like that I'm good with - especially because he packaged the originals inside with the phones. I think when a mod is irreversible then I wouldn't want to buy it. Like driver venting? Unless you're a big name and do mods as a service I'd rather not. Same policy with used cars.

Would never buy modded, you don't know the modders skill level and + if you can't try the headphone and you have go blind on reviews, mods change the sound from the way manufacturer's intended it to sound.

Rather buy it original. If it was modded, I'd like it to be a reversible mod and all original parts supplied.

 

Some exceptions do apply though.

Sell them original if you want to sell it quickly. I've seen modded cans stick around in the FS forum for ages while originals gets snatched up in a few days.
