Metalhead who just bought grado sr225i. WTF?

Ok guys, i'm a metalhead and have read so much praise for the grado sr225i as a metalheads dream headphones. I received it today and i am hugely disappointed. They sound distorted and very lifeless (fake). Surprisingly they aren't harsh to me but they just sound quite mediocre. I am amping it out of a fiio e9 with the fiio e7 attached. Am i the only one who has this bad experience? Do they just need to be burned in?

You need to let them break in if they are new.

I'm very skeptical about burning fixing distorted bass.

Maybe you just aren't a fan of the Grado sound? Being a fan of metal doesn't necessarily mean you'll like Grados. For example, I much prefer my Audio Technicas for heavier genres than my old 325is.

Then why do i love my alessandro ms1?

You probably like their more neutral sound signature. I know I do.

Hopefully break it helps, I always liked my 325s better than 225s...

I'm wondering if something is wrong with the headphone, any break in is usually very subtle so I doubt that would help much. I can't imagine there is a huge difference between the 225i and the MS1, I would expect the Alessandro to be a bit more laid back/smoother but I haven't heard it. I only have experience with 2x SR80i's and SR60i.

break in isn't subtle with grados, at all..

also, the impedance of the E9 is more than I would ever want driving grados... Could have a lot to do with the problems you're having. (better drivers, the problem is more evident)

I bought the e9 because i was told the grado sr225 needed amping

Look into impedance.. the e9 and sr225i don't match well as far as impedance is concerned.. and that's an important thing.

Maybe the Grado sound signature isn't for you. They certainly weren't for me and 70% of what I listen to is metal. I gave my SR80i 150 hours and they still sounded like crap to my ears.

So what do you recommend?

I can't say I ever noticed a big difference with break in, maybe if I directly compared one fresh and another well broken in. Otherwise I couldn't tell. But this was directly from a portable source, Optimus CD-3400 CD player about 15yrs ago (raved about in 1995 Stereophile) and Samsung Epic 4G and phone outs on computer speakers recently.

IMO there is no such thing as break in and even if there was it wouldn't fix the way Grado presents it's bass. I have never experienced it as distorted but it is of a different flavor, one of which "break in" can not fix.
