Beyerdynamic DT 150 or Sennheiser HD600 for rap/ hip hop?

Or any other recommended pairs in similar price range? I'd like the bass to extend low but still punch. Also will I need an amp for either of these? Also I don't want to sacrafice mids for bass.

Bass and mids are pretty much a seesaw in almost any headphone.  More of one means less of the other.  That said, if the headphone is clear and detailed, the mids are still very audible and musical in bassy headphones.  The HD-600 is pretty even balanced between mid-bass and mids, but it starts rolling off for sub-bass, which is important for hip-hop.  Thus, I don't recommend it for that that purpose.  The HD-650, if you can stretch your budget, has better extension while retaining the mids, so it might be a viable option.  Both of those are hungry cans and need some amplification to sound more to their potential.  The Pro 900 has lots of sub-bass, and even more mid-bass.  This seeps into the mids a little bit and recesses them, but I personally don't find it a huge deal.  Others do, and you might.  The Denon D2000 and D5000 are kind of a middle ground between the HD-650 and Pro 900 and are certainly worthy of consideration.  The Pro 900 and the Denons are fairly easy to drive for higher end headphones, and don't need as powerful of amplification as the Sennheiers, though at least some is recommended to more fully realize their potential.

The pro 900 souns good, but they do sacrifice midrange.  As long as you can handle the ugliness of the DT150, they are some of the most underrated headphones on head-fi (in my opinion).  You get great soundstage, nice punchy bass, and a solid midrange as well.

I think the DT150 is a better headphone for more bass heavy genres, while still keeping relatively forward midrange. Very underrated headphone.

How do the DT 150's do in regards to bass extension and any recommendations on where to buy? Also will I need to amp them and if so do you have any reccomendations on good ones?

Very good, it hits hard and deep with very good texture. Doesn't interfere with the midrange. Not as bassy as say, an XB500, but beats it in quality.

As for amp, I used to use it in conjunction with a uDAC and an Ibasso D6 alternating for office, so it isn't very picky with amplifiers.

Sweet, I'm about to order some from England for about $210 including shipping. They're on back order though and the guy says they probably won't get more until late Febuary though frown.gif

Can you connect the Ibasso D6 and/or Nuforce to an IPod Touch 4g.

Only the D6. You need to buy an iPod lineout cable for best quality. It only costs a few bucks.

For the uDAC, you need a PC with USB since it's powered by a USB source. There are plenty of other amping options though.

Thanks, you've been super helpful smily_headphones1.gif do you have any recommendations for iPod touch compatible amps in the $100 range?

I was fairly impressed by the Ibasso D Zero, which is +/- $100. The Ibasso site seems down though.

They say that the Objective 2 amplifier is also great. You can get it from JDS Labs for roughly $150 assembled, but it might be too large for carrying around.

Finally, the easiest and most accessible would be the FiiO E11 at only $60 or so.

Thanks for replying so quick. Are they all powerful enough for a 250 ohms pair of headphones?

My friend uses a DT150 with the E11, and it sounded pretty good according to him. Haven't tried the D-Zero with the DT150

The Objective 2 is supposedly the best you can get for sub $200, but like I said, it's pretty hefty.

Well I'm not gonna be wearing them anywhere so weight isn't really a problem unless it's like 30 lbs or something.

Yeah, the DT150 isn't exactly the pinnacled of beauty and portability.
