As the title says I returned the Bose OE2i that I got for Xmas. I didn't like them at all, wouldn't sit right on my head, sounded really bass heavy and that drowned out the other sounds of the song especially the vocals. I've only ever had a pair of B&O A8's and to me they sounded miles better than the Bose. So now I have £160 to spend at a certain store so my choices are limited.
AKG K142HD
Grado SR125i
Sennheiser PXC250-II
Grado SR80i
AKG K480
Sennheiser HD558
So about me, I listen to mostly rock and other various types of it and some dance and DJ stuff, I do listen to my stuff quite loud as well. My "set up" is non-existent I would just use them on my iphone, computer (basic audio card) and my TV for gaming and movies. I guess that opens up another question of, Would it even be worthwhile getting a reasonably price pair of headphones for use on a basic set-up?
I really appreciate any help/advice that's on offer.
Cheers.

The AKG K270s are the classic, big huge studio headphones. There is little doubt if you see someone in these cans, they're tracking tasty licks on a new album. Despite their size, they do tend...

I'll keep this very short. They are very smooth sounding. Treble toned down so not so good for rock but have a magic about them that makes them better than mark 2. I use them with a '89/'90...

Bought these on whim, for your basic train ride to work I don't mind. But its far from being the best I have own.

First, I should note that I auditioned these both straight out of the box, without any break-in time and then later after 53 hours of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite...

A very all-round headphone for me. Just the right one to take on the go or on holiday. Also as a DJ, nice noice isolation. Very durable so you don't have to wonder if it will break if you throw...

Grados are popular for rock because they make guitars sound "aggressive" and and "up front" but other find their sound fatiguing and most people don't find them to have long term wearing comfort.
The 558s have a more neutral sound that should be easier to listen to for longer stretches of time, work with more genres of music, and likely have better comfort as well.
You should skip the PCX250 and K480 unless you need to block outside noise since noise canceling circuits are usually bad for sound quality and always take money away from trying to make it sound good.
I don't know much about the K142.
The Grados and the 558s will probably be fine from the sources you already have. Soundcards are hit or miss but the newer iPhones have good quality headphone outs.
Cheers for that info, that's narrowed it down for me. But I've just found that the store also sells the HD598 but that would involve me putting up £40 along with the vouchers I currently have. Would they be worth it? or would they be overkill and a bit wasted on me for my use?
So now im down to
Grado SR125i
Sennheiser HD558
or
Sennheiser HD598 + my £40

My understanding is that the 598 is basically the same as the 558. The drivers are all made on the same line, they test them, and put the best ones in the 598s.
Its up to you to decide if its worth it. I've never compared them.
