How much money has to be spent on speakers to outperform headphones like Audeze LCD2 or HifiMan 6?

Pretty much title explains the thread.  How much money has to be spent for a speaker setup to outperform a set of really high-end headphones which are properly sourced and amped?

It truly depends on the headphone and speakers, as both are all over the place. Somebody had a thread awhile back about some $1000 Paradigm speakers besting the LCD-2 at its own game, so I'd see if you can dig up that thread.

For me a $3400 system beat my DT880 by a far stretch. Martin Logan Ethos with a Rega DAC and a Bryston amp ($10000 maybe?) whoops STAX 507. I honestly doubt any amount of money can be the SR-009 though I've never heard it but then again I've yet to hear the CLX from ML or high end Magnepans. So... maybe? But those would be 25K just for the speaker though. It costs more for sure on speakers. I haven't heard enough speaker configuration to give a ratio but I'd say, given my limited experience, at least 1:1.5. Keep in mind, that's not even factoring in the cost it took to build the acoustic environment that the speaker shops shell out and you'd have to shell if you want the best sound of your speakers. Not to mention placement. Speakers are just complicated like that :/ but when done right, may not have more details or be as detailed as headphones, but will definitely sound better.

Since we are talking speakers, it depends entirely on how well the listening room is setup. A bad room can make even the best speakers sound like ****. It's the major advantage properly designed headphones have over speakers.....the room is taken out of the equation.
