ATH-M50 vs. SRH-940? vs. D2000?

I'm looking at moving a step up from my beloved M50s. I listen to mostly lossless Classical, but also enjoy Jazz and heavy vocals.

I don't mind loosing a bit of bass, but hopefully not too much. Contrary to what I've read many say I do thing good bass is important for acoustic music, otherwise you'd be missing the deeper tones of piano, strings and obviously percussion, which can affect the emotional power of some pieces (to my ears).

I like all I've read so far about the 940s, except that they're weak on the bass. Is this true? Would that improve when running from my E10?

Also, what other suggestions do you have?

Edit:

Thinking about the Denon D2000 too. Thoughts?

Forgot to mention I need them to be closed because I'd be using them at work. Good portability is a +, but not a must. Better soundstage than my M50s would be nice.

Its not a bit, but much more imo...

Maybe SRH840. HD650 would be very good for you, but not in the same price range.

Thanks for your reply @DVDRey.

Have you owned them? Have you heard the AKG K 271 IIs? I'm wondering because I've listened to the 271s and that would be a good frame of reference for the bass. If you have... would you say it's as weak, weaker or better (stronger) than the 271s?

Also, I've read their bass response improves with amplification. Would you say an E10 is enough? I think they're low impedance, so I think they would, right?

Thanks again.

BTW, I need closed headphones because I intend to use them at work. Portability is a + as well—that's why I set my eye on the 940s. Any other suggestions?

Well, coming from your M50, you'd probably be shocked.
From what I've understood  it's more a lack of "mid bass" than bass, that is annoying.
On some title the bass seems quite obvious to me;
but if you listen to the title "Futterman's Rule" by Beasty Boys, the srh940 manages to make it non bassy, while the whole song is focused on a bass line.
EQ  can help...  More likely you'd prefer some Sennheiser hd600, hd650.
The srh940 has roughly same amount of bass as hd595 (and I  guess hd598),
but the bass is "broken" differently.
What's in favor of the  srh940 is that they have some interesting transient response, and details...

Yes i have them.

I haven't tried the K271, but the K272HD.

The SRH840 isn't in the same league (than hd650) but also very good. Bass are tight and go deep, mids are detailled and clear, treble are never harsh. Its a better headphone than the K272HD but not by a large margin.

The K272HD has much more bass (quantity) than the SRH940 and the SRH840 has better quality bass than the K272HD.

Very helpful DVDRey & extrabigmehdi, thanks.

What about the Denon D2000s?

Very good headphone, bassy, very musical and fun sounding, huge soundstage for a closed headphone but some recessed mids. Well, if you liked the M50 you ll love much more the D2000 imo, but its not the best headphone for classical/jazz imo. I say that but for me, the M50 is really not for classical/jazz imo, lol.

If you can buy it, you should like the D2000, but don't expect the same robustness than the M50.

Yeah, if you managed to like  classical music  with the M50, then why not the D2000.

I've decided to order the SRH-940s and try them out. I have a feeling the big bass I get from my M50s is just what I'm used to, and since they've simply been better than the others I've tried in many more areas that's where my ear is set; but a good mid/hi performer for the type of music that I like might be better, and I need to hear it to be able to form an informed opinion.

If I don't like 'em I can always return them and get the 2K's ;).

No problem I am also getting to try the Shure 940 and I already have the Denon D2000. Just use the Shure 940 for a few days before going back to the M50 to evaluate the sound. Just give your brain a chance to readjust to the Shure sound. I listen to classical music mostly and for me the Denon did not quite cut it for my needs. I will put my Denons for sale shortly after I get my Shure's to evaluate. Keep in touch and it would be interesting to find how if our opinions match.

Small thread hijack: any comparisons with your D2000 and the SRH940?

I just realized that maybe the reason I've enjoyed my M50s so much is because they're the newer [white box] revision, which is reportedly more neutral, less bassy than the original [blue box] ones ;).

940s should be here tomorrow for comparison... can't wait! ;)
